Lent is observed in commemoration commem-oration of the 40 days and 40 nights Our Lord spent in the , desert praying and fasting to teach what He meant by His saying: "Unless you do penance, you shall all perish." Penance and reparation for sin are essential essen-tial in the life of every Christian. Christ-ian. The fast law of the church obliges everyone between 21 and 59 to fast every day of Lent from Ash Wednesday till Holy Saturday Satur-day except the Sundays of Lent. No one is exempt from the fast, even working men, unless they are advised by a doctor not to fast. The fast means this: j 1. One full meal a day at which j a person may have meat except on Fridays, Ash Wednesday, and Holy Saturday. j 2. Two other meatless meals sufficient to maintain one's strength which should not a-mount a-mount to more than that taken at the main meal. 3.. No eating whatsoever between be-tween meals. However, any liquids liq-uids may be. taken. . Children under 21 are not obliged to fast. .They may have j meat as often as they like on all I thp rfavs nf T.pnf pvppnt tho Fri. I days and Ash Wednesday. Anyone who does not fast although al-though he is obliged, commits a mortal sin each day he fails to do so-. Lent should be a time of spiritual revival and increased devotion. Therefore, Catholics are -.urged if at all possible to make , the sacrifice to attend Mass on week days, to attend the . evening devotions on Tuesdays Tues-days and .Fridays, and to say the rosary every day. ' Those not obliged to fast are expected . to deny themselves something, to give up something they 'like but do not' need as a means of showing God their sor-j sor-j row for sin and their willingness Uo unite with Christ in His sufferings.- . . j Lenten devotions will begin in ; Copperton Thursday at 7:00 p.m. I Ashes will be distributed after i the devotions. During Lent weekly devotions consisting of Stations of the 1 l Cross, sermon and benediction will be held Tuesday in Lark, Thursday in Copperton, and Friday Fri-day in Bingham. A series of sermons ser-mons on the seven sorrows of Our Blessed Mother will be conducted con-ducted during the Lenten devotions. de-votions. o |
