The following is a close look at the 1979 State playoff picture for both regions and the results of last weeks play). Sky View and Layton were to battle Wednesday afternoon for the 1979 Region One championship. No one really expected the Bobcats to be as tough as theyve been, including the Lancers who are defending their Region One title. The Bobcats made shambles of Roy last week, whipping them 20-- 0 in Smithfidd. Sky View capitalized on Roys many miscues, their unauthoritative offense and tired defense. Layton meanwhile gained a tough win over Clear- -' The Lancers could only manage a 3 lead field, Clearfidd at halftime lead, thanks to a fired-u- p defense and Dave Burkes fumble on the Clearfield line just as the half ended. If Clearfield is to make it to the state playoffs they must beat Weber on Wednesday. The Warriors and the Falcons battle on Webers home field. Clearfield is presently in fifth place and a loss would no doubt knock them from any possibility of getting into the state tournament. 7-- 26-1- 1. stiatie Warriors Upset Bonneville Students throughout Weber High are talking it up big these days. Their Warriors defeated Bonneville 2 last week for only their second win of the season. The victory had to be a shining glow in the dark for a team that has fought and bardy failed in so many games this season. If the Warriors beat Clearfield Wednesday, they will have a shot at a playoff game. For first year coach Hal Lewis, that kind of challenge is wdl worth the while. Roy has no chance of making it to the state tournament this season, a rare item in football these days. Roy hosted Bonneville on Wednesday afternoon. 14-1- 4-- A Sta te Playoff Picture far as the Region One playoff picture goes, only the champion of the region will automatically qualify to enter the state tournament. Their first game will, be against the Region 2 No. 3 team or Region 3s No. 3 As team. The rest of the region finishers will have playoffs to enter the state finals. Finally, the No. 4 finisher in Region One will playoff with Region 2s No. 2 team to see who makes it to the state, playoffs. The schools comprising Region Two indude Brighton, Bingham, Hillcrest, Alta, Orem, and Kearns. Over, in Region Three Skyline, Olympus, Cottonwood, Granger, East and Granite make up the lineup. Gilbert Ballingham caught a pass from Cory Sylvestor in the second quarter, and again in the fourth quarter, but in both instances missed the try for a conversion. The score with five minutes remaining was 12-- 8 for the Lakers. The Warriors took the ball from their own 20 to midfield and then Shaw lofted the gamewinning aerial to Lewis, who scooted down the side line for six. We played with great in- tensity, said Coach Hal Lewis. It was our best game of the year. The victory could very wdl be a Warrior ticket to the state playoffs, depending on this week's game with Clearfield. The Lakers are out of. contention for the region title, but can still take no worse than third with a victory this week over Roy. Should Sky View beat Layton, the Lakers will reign in second place going into the state finals. Weber Coach Hal Lewis knew stop Bonnevilles Marv Ellis if he wanted to beat the Lakers, and that called for strategy. To keep the ball away from Ellis, the Warriors quick-kicke- d on third down five times. Not only did the coaches strategy keep Ellis from exploding on his patented punt returns, but it also earned good field position for the Warriors. The scheme also kept Weber within striking range of the talented Lakers, and with two minutes left to be played, he had to two-poi- quarterback Steve Shaw hit Steve Lewis on a picture-perfepass that went for 50 yards and gave Weber a 2 victory over Bonneville. The Warriors took the opening kickoff 70 yards for their first touchdown, and scored on a five yard pass from Steve Shaw to Niel Miller. On the try for the P.A.T., Bonneville was flagged far roughing the kicker, and from yards out, Danny Eastman scored on a fullback ct 14-1- nt Falcons lose 23-1-7 A light rain began falling as Clearfield took the fidd against Layton Thursday at Falconland and the weather worsened in the second half. But for the Falcons, the weather was only one of many problems they were up against, and Layton clobbered them 1 with three second half touchdowns. 130 pound scat-bac- k hurt the Falcons more when he took the second half kickoff 90 yards for a Layton touchdown. Burke scored twice after that on three and four yard bucks through the center, but Gallegos opened the flood 26-1- The biggest headache for Clearfield was last year's M.V.P. running back Dave Burke, who punished the Falcons with well-ov100 yards rushing, but there were others. er Clearfield had geared its defense lo stopping Burke, and containing Todd Vigil, who runs the option with such authority. The Falcons failed to give much heed lo the littlest Lancer of them alL Kurt Gallegos was there as second man through the line, when everyone was gunning for Burke, and he made some nifty runs off the deception. The little . gates. Clearfield looked dassy in moving the ball early in the first quarter, but had lo settle for a Brook Hicks, 30 yard field goal as the Layton defense stiffened at the ten. The big gainer on that (hive was a S3 yard run on a keeper by Hicks. Clearfield mounted another drive in the opening quarter, but fumbled on the Layton 30 yard line. The Lancers then mounted a drive, and scored on a two yard dive, early in the second quarter. The Falcons were down by four points, and still very much in contention, until Gallegos exploded on his 90 yard trip to glory. From that moment on, it was Layton's ball game.
