States tennis gathering made big headlines last spring and count on them doing it again. Ail Weber through the summer, tennis greats from the Ogden area took their share of honors in tournaments staged in and out of the state. But the big talk over the past two weeks has been in the local high school scene. Ogden has become a city of champions. Two weeks ago, Weber Highs women tennis squad combined to defeat Sky Mew and the rest of the Region One line-u- p for a fail championship. Of even bigger note is Ogdens High staking claim to the State title last weekend on the Brigham Young University campus. Ogden claims title The Tiger women, behind the strong showing of several young players and experienced seniors, edged Provo High for the state title last Saturday in Provo. Ogden came out ahead Of the seven girls who participated on the varsity 3-- A 22-2- 0. top level at Ogden, three are sophomores including their No. 1 singles player, Ismene Vetas. With that kind of youthful talent, tennis followers can well expect the Tigers to be in contention for the state title for a few years to come.' No. 2 singles player is Kathy Benson, a junior. The Tigers third player in the singles rank is Jody Way, another sophomore. Two seniors, Traci Leieingar and Tracy Erickson make up the No. 1 doubles team while Michelle San-ber- g, sophomore and Kim McCormick, senior make up the No. 2 doubles squad. Kathy Benson, whose mother Carol, coaches the Ogden crew, said, I really felt all along that we could win in region and even take the state title. I dont think any team practiced like we did. I can remember staying two hours every night in tough practice sessions. Another thing is that we girls are pretty close. All of the six varsity girls with the exception of Kim McCormick have one time or the other belonged to a racquet chib. That always makes a difference in state champions and those who never even make it to the tournament. Kim is a move-i- n from California. DiTD tolMDS,, The title was the first womens tennis team at Ogden. It was only the second state title for any womens team at Ogden. Last year the womens basketball team took state .in basketball. g Other members of the Ogden team include White, Karen Francen and Cindy Jones. Warriors elated about title Weber High waltzed through their regular season undefeated and finally edged Sky View 6 to take home their second region championship in four years. Like Ogden, Weber is loaded with plenty of young and talented stars with a few experienced sailors to keep things honest. ' Jan Ballif and Stephanie Worcester play No. 1 and No. 2 singles respectively, and both are juniors. Lei Lani Stringham, sophomore, is the Warriors No. 3 singles player. Playing No. 1 doubles is Holli Gay and Lori Swenson,' both seniors. No. 2 doubles include Heidi Petersen and Pam Wade. Other members are Camille Davis, Christine Avis and Nanette Taylor with managers Shelly .Penrod, LeAnn Camp and Valerie Christensen.
