Show Sporfstacular Thursday, December toy oescdtamitis won'ti floirgjeti ieve By Bliss Fullmer Special to Sportstacular The sports world and all of Roy lost a devoted friend in the passing of Stephen George Baglow. A cancerous brain tumor felled this giant of a man, at the age of 31. Steve first came to Roy in 1966 with his family, after his family was transfered, in civil service, to Hill Air Force Base. Steve had just graduated from Cedar Cliff High School in Camp Hill Pennsylvania, and had been recruited by Eastern Colleges to play baseball. Weber State was more than happy to accept him as a Walk-Oathlete, and he soon was playing under a n Steve graduated with honors from Weber State, and from Washington University School of Physical Therapy in 1967. He was a member of several honor societies during his school years. His first job out of school was at the Weber Memorial Hospital of Roy, where he was resident Physical Therapist. While at the hospital, he became keenly interested in Roy High School football, basketball and baseball, and rarely missed a game. He became almost a permanent fixture on the side-linetending to injuries and working with the players. Often he treated athletes in his office, and he never charged those kids a dime. There were others whom Steve treated for little, if any compensation, because he felt that they couldnt afford the cost. He worked with one man, a child-victiof polio, who had difficulty walking, even with a cane. Steve worked with the young man, and literally put him on his feet to go on an LDS Mission without the cane. One patient had to cancel Steves housecalls, insurance had expired, but because her Blue-Cras- s Steve continued calling on her, three times a week, and she was never billed. A transient from Kentucky came to Ogden on the promise of employment, he arrived in town, broke, and the job fell through. The frail young man managed to find employment, muscling 100 pound bags of dog food onto a pallet, but he injured his shoulder. Steve got word of his plight and invited him to come in. In two days the young man was back on the job, and he was never billed for services rendered. Steve had everything going his way when tragedy struck him down. He had a good job, countless friends, a nice home in a community he loved and he had a beautiful young family. Jana who is eight years old went everywhere with lies' daddy, as did five year old Susan, and seven month old Dayna would one day folbw suit, had her father lived. It was common to see Steve and Jana working out at the Roy City Complex at 5: 30 in the morning, and lesson time. swimming together in a father-daughtJana and Susan also traveled some with Steve as he made his rounds of patients. In time little Dayna would also be able to do Ain things with her father, but fate changed all of that Steve and his lovely wife, Faye, were happy. They were active in church and civic affairs. They enjoyed family life with their three beautiful daughters, and had some wonderful plans for the future. A1 of that changed when Steve was taken from his loved ones, but he started something that will never end. That young family will always be held in high esteem in our community, because of what Steve Baglow stood for. His friends in and around Roy will never forget Steve and how he changed their lives. Sixty-fivof his patients circulated a petition of love to give him encouragement when tragedy struck. They all wrote a message from their heart, and presented it to him at the hospital. Steve was deeply touched by their loyalty and support. The Steve Baglow Award Stahle Publications, through its Sun Chronicle and Sun Times weekly news papers, is establishing an annual athletic award, to be given to the most outstanding athlete at Roy High School. It will be known as The Steve Baglow Award, and will be presented at the school's annual honors night beginning next spring. It will be Roy High's mail prestigious athletic award. Details for screening of contestants for the award will be worked out with coaches and personnel at die school. I can think of no greater honor to have 1 3, 1 979 Page 23 togflovu bestowed upon one of my sons than the Steve Baglow Award, for I knew the original Steve Baglow. Steve and Faye often brought handicapped kids to Roy High ball games. Steve did a lot of work for the handicapped. They loved him . They buried Steve, but his name, and all it stood for, will live on in the memory of those whom he touched. He had compassion; he loved his fellow man, and what greater attribute can be said of anyone? I am a better man for having known Steve Baglow, and I speak for countless others who loved him as I did.
