Show Services Held Wednesday For May Eyre Mathews Funeral services were held Wednesday Wed-nesday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Minersville LDS Ward chapel for May Ellen Eyre Mathews, 89, who died Sunday evening at 8 o'clock o'-clock of causes incident to age. She was the oldest lady in Minersville. Miners-ville. The services were under direc-ton direc-ton of Bishop Marshall Hollings-head Hollings-head and prayer at the -home was offeerd by Clifford Terry; the invocation in-vocation by Harold Gillins, a nephew; neph-ew; the benediction by Dale Math-j Math-j ews, another nephew; and the grave dedicatory prayer by Lynn Mathews, a son. Prelude and postlude music was played by Mrs. Elinor Marshall, Other musical numbers included includ-ed two quartet selections, "Oh, My Father" and "Abide With Me," by Lee Marshall, Harold Baker, Emily Gillins, and Sylva Davis, accompanied by Mrs. Lyn-nea Lyn-nea Marshall; and two vocal duets, "In the Garden," by Mrs. Sylva Davis and Mrs. Vivian Marshall, (Continued on Page Three) and made many of the burial clothes for people of this area. She was active in the Relief Society, So-ciety, president of the Primary organization, or-ganization, and was a visiting LDS teacher. She also was a member of Daughters of Utah Pioneers and was noted for care of the sick in the community. Surviving, besides her sister, are six children: Mrs. Stanley (Lucy) Nicholcs, and Lynn Mathews, Antimony; An-timony; Mrs. Jule (Alctha) Gillins, Mrs. Shcrwin (Pauline) Wood and Lloyd Mathews, Minersville; and Melvin Mathews, formerly of Beaver, Bea-ver, now residing in Cedar City; also 35 grandchildren, 97 greatgrandchildren, great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren. An obituary sketch was given by Mrs. Lillian Carter McKnight, a former neighbor; and speakers wore S. Taylor Farnsworth of Beaver, Bea-ver, who told of the early life of the Mathews family while living in Beaver; and Charles K. Jameson, Jame-son, a former neighbor of Mrs. Mathews. Pallbearers were John and Don-old Don-old Mathews, Gordon and Rollin Nicholcs, Wallace Mathews, and Ray Gillins. Mrs. Mathews was born in Minersville Min-ersville January 2, 1371, a daughter daugh-ter of Benjamin and Lucy Ann Wood Eyre. She was one of eight children born of this union, only one of whom, a sister, Mrs. Myrtle Barrett, Anaheim, Calif., now survives. sur-vives. She was married to Thomas C. Mathews February 2, 1888, at Minersville, the marriage having been solemnized in the St. George LDS Temple in July, 1903. Mr. Mathews died Sept. 5, 1938. Mrs. Mathews received her schooling in Minersville. Along with raising her family of nine children, she was a fine seamstress |
