The music department has benefited from the program, as it results in a solid musical mu-sical foundation that enables students to proceed to more specialized work. 'We can't say enough about our piano lab,' concluded Johnson. 'It has improved the situation in just about every way imaginable. We are very fortunate to have it. Not long ago a delivery van pulled up to Beaver Highs front door with the schools electronic piano lab. Seven pianos were carried up the stairs to the second story music room, where school music director Gordon Johnson John-son welcomed them with open arms. The day the pianos came was the culmination of literally lit-erally months of planning, hoping and fund ralslng.Dls-trlct ralslng.Dls-trlct Superintendent Lynn Haslem had begun the effort, and finally was able to obtain ob-tain partial funding through a state school office grant. The district added some funds and the Community Education Council of the PTA helped raise the remainder. The lab consists of six pianos plus the instructor instrument which are all wired together electronically. electronical-ly. Headsets are attached to each piano so each student stu-dent can listen to his own playing or to the voice of the Instructor. The Instructor can listen to each student Individually, or to the group as a whole. This group piano facility represents the greatest potential po-tential for multiple patron use of any program in the schools. At present the piano lab is also used by students from the elementary, as well as Beaver High students and community members. Johnson John-son teaches one piano class during the day, and Ann Marshall Mar-shall comes in afternoons to help students. There are now some 65 Individuals participating in the piano program. Fifty five are public school students. stu-dents. The administration and the teachers feel that this piano lab is unique for this rural area. Other benefits from the program include: on an individual level, the students have been motivated to try something new and express themselves in a new manner. man-ner.
