During World War U, the military identified, identi-fied, through extensive testing, some of the brightest men and women available and put them in very technical and demanding demand-ing jobs. For example, all the men and women who ran the Link trainer (flight simulator) for the Air Corps tested very high on 1Q tests. Wanass was one of the gifted sailors in the Navy. His electronics training started very early in his life. ' hen Dad was finishing the inside of our new house in El Monte, Calif., the family had to move out to the garage, which had been built first. We didn't have any toilet toi-let facilities there, so we dug a hole and built an outhouse. I was reading in a magazine about a kit you could buy for however many dollars: "101 Experiments." 1 bought it with money I'd earned mowing lawns and doing things like that. The kit included, among other things, a battery, a microphone, and a speaker. I thought it would be fun to put the speaker up inside the outhouse where nobody could see it. I took the wire down and buried it underground to a place behind a tree, where I had the microphone. Then 1 told my mom, "Don't you have to go to the bathroom?" LOCAL Charming orchestra We attended the Pleasant Grove Orchestra's children's concert last Friday and were pleasantly surprised to find that the orchestra has doubled in size, and the quality was fabulous. The flute, clarinet, sax and bassoon solos in Peter and the Wolf were outstanding, along with the violin solos in Haydn, and cello solos in Pirates. The children's puppet theater was charming, so cunning. Haydn's Farewell Symphony, where the musicians got up and walked off stage, was a hoot, and the Pirates of the Caribbean arrangement was very engag- 7 Excavating Operated Equipment Rental Equipment Hauling Dump Trucks Erosion Control SPRINGVILLE.UT 801-794-2880 - - 4 , -" ,1 SYMTRA, . I graduated from high school at age 17 and waited until I was about 18 to enter the military. I didn't want to be inducted into the Army and shoot people, so I volunteered for the Navy. I was given an 1Q test and other tests, after which I was asked, "What would you like to do in the Navy?" That was kind of interesting: in-teresting: three officers asked me what I wanted to do in the Navy. I guess my IQ was the highest they'd ever measured, (My brother Dean had the same experience when he was tested for the Marines, When I was asked by someone what I thought of that, I replied, "Not very much. The Marines were never noted for their brains." I was joking of course, but the person who asked me that really re-ally cracked up. I had actually scored a little higher than my brother, and that always bothered both-ered him for him to think he was "inferior" to me.) 1 chose electronics and was sent to a new program started and named after Captain Wm. C. Eddy, who had written the "Eddy Test." It was a happy choice, because I would be going to school for a year and wouldn't get shot as soon as otherwise.
