The delightful family entertainment enter-tainment play is actually a play within a play and involves the forthcoming marriage of Theseus, Duke of Athens, to Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons. Ama-zons. A group of simple, untutored untu-tored craftsmen, anxious to entertain en-tertain the royal couple, meet in the woods to select parts for a play they are to present. However, at this time the Duke is called upon by a prominent citizen, Egeus, to evoke the old Athenian law which will force his daughter Hermia to marry the man of her father's choice, Demetrius, or accept the alternative alter-native of death or life in a convent. Hermia and her lover Lysander arrange in desperation despera-tion to meet in the woods and escape to the home of the youth's aunt where they will be married. They make the mistake mis-take of confiding in Hermia's friend, Helena, who is in love with Demetrius and she warns him of the elopement. The wood which is the destination of both the lovers and the craftsmen is filled with fairies who have come from India to wish joy and prosperity to Theseus and Hippolyta, but are involved in a quarrel between Oberon, the King, and his Queen Titania, over the custody cus-tody of a little changeling boy. The insuing mixup of all the people in the woods with different differ-ent problems is hilarious and enjoyable to watch.
