Show THE COUNTY TICKETS BEFORE another issue of The Record comes from the press both of political parties of this county H wilt have their tickets in the field. The Dcmo- H crats will hold their county convention tomorrow H (Saturday) afternoon, and the Republicans will meet H " to formulate their ticket next Monday. At this time H a short review of the various candidates and their fit- H ncss for the positions to which they aspire or for H which they arc being advanced, may not be out of H Of first importance from a political standpoint. H at jeast, is the office of representative to the state legislature. It seems to be pretty generally conceded that the honor of naming him is due the southern H end of the county, and the available legislative tim- B ber in Cedar City and vicinity has been pretty thor- 1 oughly "cruised." Dr. M. J. Macfarlanc and Mr. H Parley Dalley arc the names mentioned in connection H with the democratic nomination, with the predomi- ' nance of sentiment apparently favoring Dr. Mc. In 1 the republican column the names of S. j. Foster, J. G. H Pace, R. L. Jones, R. A. Thorley and H. J. Doolittle 1 arc noticed, with Foster and Jones apparently in the H ascendency. B- John W. Bcntlcy, the present incumbent, appar- H ently has a cinch on the Republican nomination to H succeed himself. Mr. Bentley is an exceedingly faith- H ful and every competent official and it would be a mis- H take to make any change in this office at present. 1 We have not learned who the democrats have in mind B for the position. H It goes without saying that Alfred Froyd will r again be the nominee of the democratic party to suc- r cced himself in the office of sheriff. As his opponent H the Republicans are mentioning E. M. Colvin, a res- H ' ident of the western part of this county, and a man H of wide and varied experience in dealing with crim- H inals, who was for some years attached to the sher- H iff s office of San Bernardino Co., California, in the fl identification department, and who is a finger print H expert. Clothed with no authority, he has already M been instrumental in frightening away from this coun- M ty some of the most desperate and daring criminals H J with which it has ever been infested. Others men- H '' tioned are Lehi M. Jones and Invin Walker, both rcs- M idents of Cedar City and cx-servicc men. This is an H important position and is each year becoming more H exacting and hazardous. M It has been reported that Pres. H. W. Lunt would M ( not accept renomination as commissioner. We hope H that this report is without foundation in fact. Pres. H Lunt is better acquainted with the affairs of the coun- H , ty than any other man ; he has the respect and confi-B confi-B . dencc of everyone, and we can ill afford to lose him 1 from the familiar place at the Commissioners' table. H Especially in view of the fact that William Lund, an- M other able member of the board, has removed from' H the county and will not hereafter be available. The Eeople of Iron county are mighty sorry to lose Mr. und, for he is a splendid citizen and has been an M excellent public official. There will be two county commissioners to elect H this fall, Mr. Hugh L. Adams of Parowan, another H highly compqtent official, being the hold-over mem- H ber of the board. In . IN the race for county assessor it seems reasonably certain that the nominees will.be brothers Hillrqan and Macscr Dalley. Macser, the present incumbent, is a democrat, Hillman a republican. Both arc surveyors sur-veyors by profession and training. Both have had wide experience and arc well acquainted with the ownership and value of property within the county. The party in each case seems to be insistent upon the boys making the race, so that they have no alternative al-ternative but to accept the "brother against brother" contest. As both arc well qualified, it will be up to the narty vote to decide the matter between them. Unless he positively refuses to run, E. H. Ryan, the present competent county attorney, will without a question of doubt be renominated by the Republicans, Republi-cans, and J. M. Foster has a cinch on the Democratic nomination. Miss Kate Taylor, of Parowan, has been such a faithful and efficient county recorder during the past two years and has given such universal satisfaction that it would be a mistake to disturb her incumbency. incum-bency. It is being freely talked by Republicans of endorsing her on their ticket, or nominating her if the Democrats fail to do so. The naming of the candidates for treasurer is usually us-ually conceded to the county seat town, and wc have not heard candidates for this office discussed. Brother Bro-ther Morgan Richards, the present incumbent, is one of the finest characters this county has ever produced and is always faithful and earnest in any positions to which he has been elected or appointed, whether civil or ecclesiastical; but there is a wide-spread feeling that Bro. Richards is getting a little old for strenuous public life, and he will probably entertain this view himself. Wc should have a young, virile and honest person for the position. (to) |
