"The photograph was taken in ion Canyon, Utah, recently declared a na- H tional park, and shows wTiat apparent- H ly is a cliff dwelling 100 feet long and H (() or 70 feet wide. It is probable, according to Mr. Powell, that no hu- man foot has been in the dwelling for 1500 years or longer. In this fact lies its chief archaeologicnl importance, as HH other cliff dwellings, found at the sur- HH face, have been the homuit of animals H and much disturbed since being in- H habited by their original builders. H "The photograph was taken at a H distance of about three-quarters of a B mile from the cliff, Mr. Powell having no idea that it would reveal anything HVBh of particular interest. The portion of HBVJ the photograph which later was found HBflJ to show the ancient dwelling was less HBflJ than a quarter of an inch in size. HHVJ Through successive enlargements this flHVJ was increased to about twelve inches. HBVJ "The dwelling is about 400 feet a- hove the top if the shale slide at the HBVJ base of the cliff. leading down from HBV the dwelling are traces of the ledges HHhJ once used by the dwellers to go up HBVJ and down in their safe retreat. These HBV ledges have been almost completely HHBh eroded by the elements in the lapse of years, and it is safe to say, according HHHl to Mr. Powell, that the dwellings there HBVJ have been undisturbed for many ecu- HBV "The discovery of the cliff dwelling HBV in the picture came as a complete sur- HBHj prise to Mr. Powell yesterday, lie has HBflJ derided, however, to make an early HBHj investigation of the place and believes that a skilled Alpine climber may be HHVJ able to pick his way up the almost flBflfl destroyed ledges which the ancient in- HHVJ i habitants were wont to climb."
