A. 3mr.ett. student fireman, of Santaquia, were killed in a wr-' k which occurred early Sunday mi. ruing, ru-ing, three mil 53 this side of Sanrtj. when No. 3 wen in'o the ditch as a result of soft track, cause! by irrigation irri-gation wate:- running beside lh railroad rail-road bed. The train left Salt Lake at 11:5b Saturday night and when it reached the high bank, near Sandy at 12:40 the engine left the rails and turned completely over endways and landed in the ditch, while the baggage and mail cars piled on top. The day coaches were tipped over but the pullman's stayed on the track Besides those killed, about a dozen doz-en were injured. Mr. Howarth had lived in Milford ior several years and was well and favorably known here. His first wife died about three years ago and he had married again. His body was sent to Colorado, his former home, for burial. Mr. Bennett was buried at Santakuin. Sam Runswick had lived here off and on for many years, where he was known by everybody as "Bish" Runs wick. He was one of the oldest engineers en-gineers in point of service on the Salt Lake route. The funeral services which were held in Salt Lake City last Tuesday noon were in charge of the B of L. E., of which he was a member. Quite a number of the railroad rail-road men from here went to attend the services. Otto Steenbock and E. A. Olson were two of the pall bearers. The floral pieces were most beautiful. beau-tiful. Mr. Runswick was 44 years of age. He was born July 14. 1879 in Sweden. Swed-en. He has been a locomotive engineer engi-neer for the past twenty-five years, and for the last twenty years he had been with ,the Los Angeles and Salt Lake railroad. For the last seven years he had been engineer of trains Nos. 3 and 4 running between Salt Lake and Milfcrd. He was engineer of the pilot train which preceded President Harding's special to Zion National park. June 2G and 27. Mr. Runswick is survived by his widow and four children, Clarence, Roland, Wallace and Margaret; his parents. Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Runswick Runs-wick of Springville. |
