NEWS BUREAU A total of eighteen members of the faculty of the University of Utah will be absent during the coming year to raise their scholarship by study in other institutions or by research and investigation. Of this number eleven are of professional rank and six are instructors. During the past year ten members of the faculty were away. Dean J. L. Gibson went to Europe and obtained his Doctor's degree. The others were in the larger educational institutions insti-tutions of this country. Six of those who were away last year will continue contin-ue their studies one more year. Most of them will at that time receive re-ceive their Doctor's degrees. "It is the policy of the university to keep the entire faculty in direct touch with the best and most recent educational thought of the day. It is for this reason we grant faculty members leaves of absence to pursue their studies and sabbatical leave when they have served here seven years," said Dr. George Thomas, th6 president of tha university. "A year's leave of absence not only increases in-creases the scholarship of the instructor, in-structor, but it serves to give him addedi inspiration through his contact con-tact with other institutions. Never before in the history of education edu-cation in the state have so many faculty fac-ulty members been away for advanced work, but it is one of the movements at the University to keep its standards stan-dards as high as possible. |
