Show FROM BOSTON. By permission of Prest. (President) Preston we are permitted to peruse and publish a letter from Elder J. H. Brown, Jr. (Junior), who is now in Boston studying to make himself more proficient in his art. I thought a few lines from us might be of some interest to you, in regard to our welfare. We were just one week coming here, and had a very pleasant trip, considering the season of the year. On our arrival we found plenty of friends, and are getting along first-class. I did not find Boston quite as I had expected, as the bright side of the cities of the world are only painted to us. I have no desire to live here. I would not give my little wooden shanty in peaceful Logan, among the Latter-day Saints, for all of Boston. These long-faced Christians may be all right, but give me Utah and the "Mormons" forever. And how these hypocritical editors and parsons can stand up here among all manner of evil, sin, wickedness and debauchery and bull rag the "Mormons" I cannot tell - it seems the essence of impudence. Even here in this city of fine arts, the "Hub" as it is called, a gentleman told me there were over three thousand and probably five thousand street walkers in Boston. Just think of it and then weep for the Christian morality. Smoking and chewing tobacco, drinking liquor, and taking the Lord's name in vain are quite fashionable here, real accomplishments. Polished gentlemen think nothing of blaspheming the name of God. We do considerable preaching and are using all the influence we can to do good. We find a great deal of opposition but I believe we do away with a great deal of prejudice. There are thousands of good, honest people in the world, yet there is a great deal of work to be done by the Latter-day Saints. I wish we could get a number of copies of the articles of faith sent to us so that we could circulate them among the enquiring people. I think they would be the means of doing some good. We took your advice and hoisted the true flag and colors of our religion and are respected for it. Willie is getting on first rate in his art, and is a good boy indeed. Asking an interest in your faith and prayers I remain your brother in the gospel. J. H. Brown, Jr. (Junior). |
