Show Dies Rally To Dump Stubborn Rams, 13-3 By MAC BACKMAN Chronicle Sports Writer Utah's Redskins played minus-yardage football in the first quarter but beat the Colorado State Rams, 13-3, in Fort Collins, in a game marred by fumbles and intercepted passes. The win brought Utah's season record to three wins and two losses. The Rams started out like they were going to run the Utes out of the stadium when Ram QB Eddie Belt passed to Jess Willis twice for 18 and 15 yards and then to AlLear. A "grabbing-the-face-mask" penalty on Utah brought the ball to the Utah 8 and set up a field-goal attempt by Bob Wolff, who then kicked a 24-yard field goal. By the end of the first quarter, CSU had a 3-0 lead and Utah hadn't advanced beyond their own 28 yard line. THE UTES started to move the ball to the second quarter when a Utah charge led by Allen Jacobs moved the ball to the CSU 35 where Utah gave the ball up on downs. Utah soon got the ball back on an intercepted pass by by C. D. Lowry who lugged the ball back to the 50-yard stripe. Utah, again led by Jacobs, brought the ball down to the CSU 2 where back Ron Coleman packed the ball into the end zone unmolested un-molested when the CSU defense ganged up to stop a Jacobs drive up the middle. Roy Jefferson converted the point and Utah led 7-3 at half. In the third quarter, Jefferson picked off a misplaced Belt pass deep in CSU territory and ran the interception over giving Utah a 13-3 lead and the eventual margin of victory. Colorado State threatened and drove to the Ute 24. The threat ended when Lear fumbled and Pat McKissick recovered to give Utah back the ball. Utah then drove the ball back to the CSU 21 but Ram Ken Blair intercepted the ball on the 4-yard line. The Rams were unsuccessful in moving the ball and kicked to the Utah 11 where John Pease fumbled and CSU recovered with 1 1 yards to go for a touchdown. On first down, however, Lowry intercepted his second pass of the afternoon to stop the Colorado State threat. In the fourth quarter, Utah recovered two CSU fumbles and McKissick intercepted his second pass of the afternoon and Utah held on to win 13-3. Jacobs led the Utes in rushing with 100 yards in 20 carries although the Redskin ground gain totaled only 90 yards as a result of the strong budding Colorado State defense. Both squads had trouble holding the ball as each losftieC fumbles. Utah's pass defense was quick in picking up four interceptions, inter-ceptions, one of which Jefferson converted to six points while the CSU secondary nailed one Ute aerial. |
