His is a story of a bank that failed and of a character which places respect and righteousness ahead of persnal gain and legal loopholes. John M. Smith, Wisconsin's state treasurer, is as simple as his name and proud of it. Earning $5,000 annually, he keeps only $1,200 less than $25 weekly. The bulk of his earnings, $3,800, goes to the depositors of the Lumberman's Lum-berman's bank of Shell Lake, Wis., where he signed a declaration of unlimited un-limited liability before liquidation began 13 years ago. |
