Show 1 rt ?! l4 Dairy farmer increases silage yields Clearfield Courier, April 1 6, 1 980 Page 9 Swapp gave the invocation; with more than 250 guests present to enjoy the delicious dinner. Commissioner Eberhard introduced Utahs first lady, who spoke, giving a moving tribute to all the volunteers. She expressed appreciation from both she and Gov. Matheson for the tremendous volunteer effort in Davis County as well as throughout the state of Utah. Senior Beating the odds at Las Vegas is largely a matter of luck. Beating the odds in Citizens Corner dairy farming, however, depends a lot more on expertise than on luck. Thats the opinion of Joe Hill, a veteran dairyman at Kaysville, Utah, who traces much of his expertise to his 31 years of experience in both farming and dairying. Joe Hill is a rather distinctive dairy farmer in Dick Brown of Ogden presented a musical program with songs and guitar. The guests were simply delighted with his performance. Mrs. Matheson then presented the plaques to the 11 volunteers with more than 400 hours of service. Comm. Swapp presented special letters of recognition to various dignitaries. Donna Swensen and Comms Swapp and Eberhard presented certificates of appreciation to each volunteer with more than 30 hours of service. Mrs. Matheson was presented a special d china plate, by Joyce Smith, director of the Golden Years Center. The plate had been painted by Donna Browne of Bountiful. The banquet is a token of thanks to all those who make volunteering such a great experience. News from Heritage Center By Carol Lewis Davis County senior citizens were honored with a visit from Mrs. Norma Matheson at the annual Volunteer Banquet held in Layton recently. The banquet is held each spring to honor the many people who have given service to their fellow-me- n through the Davis County Council on Aging program. The volunteers, had a total of 24,350 hours of volunteer service for the 1979 year. The welcome and introduction of special guests was given by Donna Swenson, chairman, Commissioner Morris that 1. he grows all the corn silage he feeds (200 acres of it); 2. the biggest single component in his feed ration is corn silage and 3. his corn silage yields per acre and milk production figures are hand-painte- significantly higher than both the local and state averages. Hills 290 Holstein milkers averaged 16,011 pounds of milk and 599 pounds of last lactation butterfat compared to the state average of 15,450 pounds of milk and 533 pounds of butterfat. Hills yields silage averaged 25 to 27 tons per acre compared to 19 to 20 tons per acre for Davis County and 15 to 17 tons per acre for the state. Hill believes that the corn variety he planted, Funks was largely responsible for his above average yields. Hill feeds corn silage throughout the entire year. His milking herd is divided into two classes: the top milkers HILL, veteran dairy farmer at Kaysville, evaluates high grain content of Funk's corn silage which he feeds throughout the year to the 250 Holstein cows in his milking herd. JOE receive a daily ration of 24 pounds of corn silage, 18 pounds of alfalfa and 28 pounds of grain concentrate. The second string receive 30 pounds of corn silage, 22 pounds of alfalfa and 126 pounds of grain concentrate., Although Hill stresses the importance of effective weed control and proper fertilizing in silage corn production he also pays close attention to all facets of production from seed bed.Drenaration through harvesting. Hills seed bed preparation is extremely simple: he plows twice with a harrows once and then seeds. Hill usually plants from April 25 through May first and harvests the first part of September. His planting population of 28,000 seeds last season produced 27,000 plants at harvest time. His row width was 32 inches. Last season Hill provided a preplant herbicide and a fertilizer application which included 125 pounds of nitrogen and 100 pounds of culti-packe- r, phosphate per acre. But this year, Hill exwe plan on applained, both as a the fertilizer plying preplant and also following emergence. Applying some of the fertilizer when the plants are about three feet tall should provide better utilization of the fertilizer. Hill 12 irrigates every days, starting when the plants are one foot tall about five weeks after planting. During the season he irrigates, on average, five times. Hill credits as a major contributor to his better than average corn silage yields and milk production. Here is how he evaluates this varietys most out- standing agronomic traits: first, top yield potential; second, high grain content; third, excellent standability; fourth, desirable maturity and fifth, wide adaptation to local growing conditions.
