Show SPURIOUS BUTTER. The House Committee on Ways and Means have made a report upon a bill to tax the manufacture of that dishonest imitation of butter, called "oleomargarine", they recommend that manufacturers and dealers pay an annual sum for license, and that a stamp tax of one-fourth per lb. upon all classes of spurious butter be collected by placing revenue stamps upon each package sold. Suitable penalties are prescribed for violations of the law. The Committee should include proper inspection of lard rendered from the carcasses of diseased and smothered hogs in Chicago and other large cities. They would then receive the thanks of consumers for giving a practical lesson to dishonest rogues, who care nothing for the health of their neighbors as long as they can accumulate wealth. We have reason to believe that much of the lard shipped to the western states and territories is of the class named. |
