Show lylany Cases Of Influenza Throughout State According to the reports submitted sub-mitted to the Utah State Board of Health by local health officers offi-cers for the week ending December De-cember 13, the epidemic of in. fluenza continues to spread throughout the State. Because of the fact that physicians are called to care for only a small percentage of the patients, it is difficult to even estimate the ac. tual number of cases. A survey of the larger schools of Salt, Lake City and county reveals the fact that from 20 to 50 per cent of the school students are absent. While many of these absences ab-sences are due to the fact that the students have temporary Christmas work th egreat major, ity of them represent cases of influenza. A moderate estimate of the cases, places the number in Salt Lake City at 5,000 and between 2,000 and 2,500 in Salt Lake county. Provo city reports 500 cases. J Reports from local health offi. I cers and a check with the ' school officials of Ogden City ' and Weber county indicate that the epidemic has not as yet reached that area. There are ap parently a number of counties in the state that have thus far es- , caped the epidemic. j Doctor D. Keith Barnes, di- j rector of Davis county Health i department, reports that in the southern part of Davis county approximately 25 per cent of the population are affected while 10 per cent are affected in the central portion of the county, but that the epidemic has apparently ap-parently not reached the northern north-ern part of the county. Judging from reports from physicians and school officials the disease is still of a ratther mild nature. However, three or four days of illness from the infection leaves the patient extremely ex-tremely weak. Everyone, here, fore, should take ample time for a complete recovery before re. turning to school or resuming his work. Thirty seven cases of pneumonia pneu-monia were reported to tire State Board of Health during the past week as compared with 39 cases for the previous week. Two cases of diphtheria were reported from Salt Lake City and cne from Salt Lake county. Salt Lake City also reported one case of typhoid fever; the source of the infection has not as yet been determined. One ease of lctharg. ic encephalitis an done case of undulant fever were reported from Salt Lake City and county, respectively. Other diseases reported were as follows: chcikenpox 131, mumps 7, measles 2, scarlet fe. i ver 7, whooping cough 19, go- I norrhea 9, syphilis 22. I |
