Thorughout the nation some 6,500 local boards now are issuing questionnaires and classifying registrants reg-istrants so as to have in readiness the required 160,000 Class 1-A men, those available for immediate ser-i vice when the Army Corps Area commanders ask for them, C. A. Dykstra, Director of Selective Service, Ser-vice, asserted. j Issuance of a call for a given number of men for any one month doss not imply that they will all be inducted into the armed forces on specific dates, Mr. Dykstra said. Re pointed out the Corps Area commanders may induct trainees as they require them and indicated indica-ted that inductions under the Jan- ; uary call probably will be spread ' out from early in January until February' 1. Local boards and their examining physicians are well aware of the : work that must be accomplished before the call is made and are ' acting accordingly, Mr. Dykstra as-1 serted. He said: "With the first call men almost completed the entire Selective Service System has gamed vast experience and is well prepared to respond to the expected call for 160,000 trainees in January. i "The November call for 30,000 men was merely an introduction to the ta.sk which confronts us in j January and will continue to face; us. But in that call we learned les.ors which should be of great i . t o us hi the future. . . "All operations of Selective Service, Ser-vice, including, classification and pnysical examination of prospective prospec-tive trainees, are becoming more and more coordinated every day, and as they increase in uniformity administrative problems decrease proportionately." The Director pointed out that a cenfetencs of State directors of Selective Service and State pro curement officers will be held in ; Washington December 12 and 13 and said that every effort then will be made to ensure "the smoothest possible" operation of Selective Service in the January and sub- j sequent calls. |
