Show Billy Emerson is Dead. Boston, Feb. 23. William Emerson Richmond, or, as he was familiarly known, Billy Emerson, the famous minstrel, died last night at Diman's hotel on Elliot street, where he had lived for several months past. Death was due to a complication of diseases resulting in consumption. He was 56 years of age and a native of Belfast, Ireland, coming to this country coun-try when a year old. His first stage appearance was in 1857, with Joe Sweeny's Swee-ny's minstrels as a balladist and jig dancer. 'rf During the latter part of his career he is said to have received the highest salary ever paid to an individual performer per-former in minstrelsy. His widow- lives in San Francisco, and a son by his first marriage resides in New York. |
