Show CITIZENS SWELL MEMORIAL FUND With a county organization complete com-plete to raise funds for the erection of a monument suitable for the Mormon Mor-mon Battalion, Gunnison has fell in line and the citizens are supporting the movement most heartily. Bishop E. L. Swalberg, who was assigned to arrange for an organization for raising rais-ing funds for the project here, slates that the $108, assigned to Gunnison as her portion, would soon be met. The Entre Nous club, comprising the business men of the city, has subscribed sub-scribed $50 and it is likely that this amount will be materially increased by the club members. The Mormon Battalion Monument committee, created by the state legislature leg-islature for the purpose of securing a fitting monument to the men who went into the service of the United States to fight in the Mexican war. has begun an aggressive campaign to raise $100,000 for an enduring memorial to the Mormon Battalion. The legislature of 1917 made an appropriation of $100., 000 for such a monument, this fund to be available after Jan. 1, 1920, providing that the people of the state raised a like amount. The commission is opening its campaign for the people's contribution contribu-tion of $100,000 for the monument, and expects to complete the campaign cam-paign on January 30, 1920, the 74th anniversary of the official ending of the eventful march of the Mormon Battalion from the Missouri to the Pacific coast. The commission expects to select a site for the monument on Capitol hill and a model for the monument has been secured on which are depicted de-picted scenes of the march of the Battalion. An active canvass of the state will be made in January and every patriotic patri-otic citizen is expected to subscribe |
