All of a sudden u teri-ibleexplosion occurred on the stand, almost in their very faces. For the moment intense confusion ensued. The report w as almost as j loud as that of a shot gun, hut the terrible fumes wdiicii arose directly, soon dissipated the awful pictures of their imaginations. A huge giose egg. which had b en preserved pre-served fir many years, must have been slightly jarred and it burst, scattering bits of the shell in every, conceivable direction.
