Professional sports are about one thing: winning. If a coach hasn't consistently won, he probably isn't going to get the job done anywhere; it just doesn't happen. Every year, a number of teams fire one guy in hopes of finding the next Bill Belichick. There are guys out there that have proven track records of being perennial losers. They have head coaching experience, but they don't have the wins, and they still get new jobs as head coaches of another team. Current head coaches that fit that bill would have to include the Bills' Dick Jauron and Herm Edwards with the Chiefs. Jauron had one good year with the Bears, and that was mostly luck. 'David Heck led all scorers with 20 points, coupled with his 6 assists. Heck held Longwood star Maurice Sumter at bay, holding him to a mere 10 points on 4-11 shooting, seven under his season average. Coach Dick Hunsaker was impressed with Heck's defense and said, "David came out and really met a competitive challenge of trying to defend Sumter." Hunsaker lauded Heck's overall performance. With the win, UVSC extended the all-time series against the Lancers to an impressive 5-0. From the get-go, UVSC showed dominance, which would not die down. The Wolverines kept the lead from the opening tip to the final buzzer. They had plenty of early substitutions, but were still able to maintain a flow in their game plan. Longwood was unable to keep up with the changes. Heck started the game off with a 3-point bucket, and then fed Peter Brown for an alley-oop lay up shortly thereafter. Chris Bailey subsequently dished it to Jordan Brady for a hammer dunk, causing the student section to surge with excitement. Next, Bailey set up Heck's second 3-pointer to put the game in UVSC's favor for the remainder of the contest. The Wolverines raced out to a 10-3 lead. Chad Clark/NetXNews Forfeits cost wrestlers chance for home win Matt Beaudin Sports Writer In their first home match of the year, the Wolverines wrestling team quickly found themselves overmatched and overpowered by the Bears of Northern Colorado in their opening match of the Western Wrestling Conference. The Wolverines were as cold as the chilly winter weather, as they struggled to put points up on the Scoreboard in the 30-13 loss. It can be hard to take anything positive away from such a lopsided defeat, but UVSC Coach Greg Williams said, "Our young guys were getting takedowns and continuing to fight. When you look at how young our team is and with the injuries we have had... We want to see progression in every match. I want us to keep fighting through the whole match whether we are behind or ahead. I like the progress I saw from our last match. "" Two of UVSC's freshman, Eric McAllister and Justin Morrill, were able to do that as they came up with victories in their respective matches. Despite the score, the match was closer than the Scoreboard would indicate as the two teams split the matches that were actually wrestled. UVSC was unable to field wrestlers for the heavyweight match, as well as the 125-pound match, costing the Wolverine's 12 precious points. Northern Colorado jumped out to a quick lead as Luke Salazar and Devan Lewis each won their matches by major decision following the Wolverines' forfeits. In what looked to be a possible momentum-swinging match for the Wolverines, 174-pounder Mark Fenwick locked up with Northern Colorado's Chase Walker. Fenwick dominated Walker as he overwhelmed him, amassing four takedowns and winning the match by major decision. With Fenwick's win, the crowd began to get into it, but they were quickly silenced as Northern Coloraod's Shawn Vincent pushing the Bears lead Chad Clark/NetXNews JusHn Rawle, from Springville, earns a 5-1 decision over Northern Colorado's Richard Lohr in the 149 pound weight class. / handled UVSC's Brock Jardine. In the 197-pound match, McAllister brought UVSC to within five by defeating Calen Nicholl of the Bears, but with the next two matches resulting in forfeits for the Wolverines, the score was pretty much out of reach at 24-7. The victories by Morrill and Rawle helped UVSC earn some points, but not nearly enough. Rawle as the only returning starter has assumed the role as the senior leader.
