Show 10 TIM PA NOGOSTTIMES March27,2013 I 1 1 - - PGHS Fall Sports Made Pleasant Grove Proud ---"7- s -- iMiln iMinlMl' llii L - i t Kent Allen Before the season began, Ju-nior defensive back, Zack Dawe stated that the players felt in bet-ter shape, were better prepared and had a better idea of how to approach this last season with a new head coach, Les Hamil-ton. After watching the games, both overall and region, I have to agree. The players came out and played hard and didn't lose focus. They followed the game plans and proved they could ex-ecute a new system and be suc-cessful in each game. The Vikings ended the sea-son with a 6 win 5 loss record overall and 3-- 2 in region play with a loss at State to Jordan. Skyler Munson, senior wide receiver, caught 44 passes for 1,027 yards, 13 touchdowns, and ran the ball 25 times for 32 yards with three more touch-downs, Munson and Dallin Hatch, a senior wide receiver team mate, both signed to play football at the next level with Weber State. Colton Babb, a senior running back, carried the ball 173 times for 796 yards and seven touchdowns. Senior quarterback, Michael Anderson, completed 139 passes of 260 for 2,351 yards and 22 touchdowns. The defense held most of their offensive opposition to under their average gains and created a lot of confidence and support with fellow players and fans. One of coach Hamilton's goals is to bring a football tradi-tion back to Pleasant Grove. Af-ter his first season and the suc-cess he has seen, I think it may happen. Wrestling came back again and proved how focused and de-termined coach Brock Moore's wrestlers are, as they won the State 5A Title for the third straight year racking up 288.5 points and claiming six individu-als titles. Ben Anderson defeat-ed Brock George of Syracuse 5-- 1 at 106 lbs. At 113 lbs., Ky-so-n Levin defeated Jacob Bar-ton from Bingham 18-- 3. (This is Kyson's second straight title). At 132 lbs, Bronson Young de-feated AJ Arteaga from Fremont High 6-- 1. In one of the premier contests of the evening, Bridger Cutler came from behind in overtime to defeat Ken Astle, the defending state champion from Layton, 16-1- 1. At 160 lbs. TJ Wind defeated Colton Marshal of Layton 6-- 5. At the heavy weight class, 285 lbs, Zac Dawe defeated Richard Larsen of Jordan 7-- 4. There could be more titles to come as Wind and Dawe are both juniors, Levin is a sophomore, and Anderson is a Freshman. .The team gives The Pleasant Grove High School Girls Volleyball Team racked up a 22-- 4 season record on it s way to claiming the Utah State 5A Title this year. The Girls Volleyball team racked up a 22-- 4 season record on it's way to claiming the State Title this year. They haven't had a championship here for volleyball since 2009. Of the four losses this year, three were against region foe, Lone Peak. But, paybacks were called for as the young ladies swept the defending state champs from Davis in the semi-fina- ls 3-- 0 and did the same to second rated Lone Peak in the championship game. Head coach Allyce Jones depended on her seniors to give the team the leadership and con-fidence they needed. Senior Melissa Fuchs came up big in the championship game as she led the team's defense with 21 kills. The boys and girls basket-ball teams did reasonably well as they ended up with an even 4-- 6 region record, entered the play-off- s, and then went one and done and were out. High scor-ers on the girls team were Mek-enn- a Miles with 330 points 15 points per game, Megan Wilde with 255 points11.5 points per game, and Lilly Evans with 135 points6.14 points per game. On the boys team, Riley Court scored 373 points15.54 points per game, Matt Conway had 334 points13.92 points per game, and Forrest Pincock had 289 points12.04 points per game. With a 13-- 5 win over neighboring Timpanogos under their belts, the Varsity Baseball Team now has four wins and a rainout on their record. They played in the Gates Founda-tion Tournament at Dixie State College in St. George earlier this month. Their first game was called because of rain, but they beat Copper Hills once and Brighton twice before returning home. "This is a young team", said head coach Darrin Henry. "They have no preconceived ideas on how to play Pleasant Grove Baseball. They are eager to get out there and create their own luck". They will play at Alta and Murray and then come home to play Olympus, Boun-tiful and Davis, then start their region play with three games against Riverton on April 9 at 4 p.m. There is some construction going on around the softball and baseball diamonds which should greatly improve the viewing and playing areas for both the boys and girls fields. They are trying to have the work done by the time region competitions begin. The balance of Spring sports are just getting started and we will keep track of them and do another update toward the end of the school year. For school years 2013-201- 5, our region competitors will be changing. Currently, we play American Fork, Lone Peak, I.ehi, Riverton, and Bing-ham high schools in Region 4. Starting this Fall, our com-petitors will be, American Fork, Herriman, Lehi, Lone Peak, Ri-verton and Westlake. The Utah High School Athletic Associa-tion likes to mix things up ev-ery few years and this is one of those years. Athletic Director Nate Johnston said, "It could make us more competitive in a new region makeup, but we still have to win every game; we will still be in a pretty tough league." I think this is one reason I hesitate to signal since I know how many times I've been guilty of forgetting to turn the signal off. It is illegal to not signal, and if you get pulled over it doesn't matter what your ex-cuse is, you will get a ticket, or at least a warning. Can you imagine how many highway patrol officers it would take to enforce that law in Utah? Our local police could get their quota in the first three or four days of the month. I'm still contemplating the rewrite of the Handbook, but whereas I don't think any-one reads the official one, why would they read the re-vised version. Happy driv-ing, and for your sanity try to avoid four-way- s and yield signs. |
