Physicians everywhere reewnmetd it FORMER "BAD BOY" NOW AT HEAD OF TRAINING SCHOOL "Bill" Ireland Now 1$ Anx-ious to Give Others a Chance. MIlledRevtlle, Ga. Five years ago Bill Ireland was convicted In one of the Juvenile courts of being a "bad boy generally" and committed for an In-definite period to the Georgia Training School for Boys in this town, which is another way of saying that be was sent to the state reformatory, for that Is what the school Is. Today Bill Ireland Is superintendent of the school, having Just been ap-pointed to sueeeed Mrs. Orlnn Mtinson, deceased, who held that Job and with ititl's assistance as her first lieutenant did It well, even If she was a womnn dealing with delinquent youths. Bill Ireland, "bad boy generally" has chanced In five years to William K. Ireland, a quiet business-lik- e man, who la doing more than anybody else In the state to show delinquent youtha that bucking the world and Its codes and regulations will get them nowhere except into trouble, and that obedience to law Is necessary to success and hap-piness. He Is doing this throniih sympathy. He was a bud boy and knows that you ran't "beat" reform Into that type. You've got to understand the boy, see his problems, pat him on the back and help him. Believes In Boys. "After all, there are not any bad boys In our school," says Bill. "They're Just fellows who have been neglected and misunderstood. There la plenty of fine mnterlul In thera all right. The Uilng Is to get their confidence, make "Find Out What's Been the Trouble With Them." them know you're a real friend, then find out what's been the trouble with them. "Most of these fellows never had 'a chance. They grew up in neglect with the hand of the world seemingly against them. When we get them here, clothe them right, feed them, teach them, and give them the sort of employment that makes them hale and hearty, they change In an amazing fashion." None has changed more than Bill Ireland himself. He was sent to the Institution by a court at Vaidosta, Ga., and It seems that from the minute he set foot within Its doors he swore to make good. The reason was that Mrs. Maiison, then superintendent, put the Bituation to him In the right light, showed hlui where he was heuded, and asked him to be a man Instead of a bad boy. Made Good Himself. In a little while Bill was a "trusty," In a little bit more Mrs. Manson put him In charge of the farm at the school ; und It wasn't long after that that he was her secretary and her first lieutenant. When she died the logical thing was to make Bill Ireland super-intendent in her place. The trustees weren't actuated by sentiment In choos-ing Bill. They made the one-tlni- e "bad boy generally" superintendent because he was the man for the Job. He Is working 15 hours a day now to make the training school the best ol Its sort In the country. One of the things he Is after Is more equipment for vocational training. Interparliamentary Union Picketed by Irish n v""! ,wH'i.. tjir T7TfW n .JI nulls' .J titers d L v Tt,v vw;iw ' i ) I . Stm ? Explains How Oil "Puts Out' Wigglers Mosquito "wlKgiers," or larvae, are not smothered by the oil sprayed on their pools; they simply drown. The researches of Ir. Puvld Kellln, work-ing at the .Molteno Institute In Sotith Africa, and Just announced In London by Sir Arthur K. Shipley, run counter to the older and commonly accepted notion. Mosquitoes and their larvae, like all Insects, have no lungs or pills to breathe with, such as higher animals hnve. They get the oxygen they re-quire through systems of tubes open-ing directly to the outside air nnd branching Inward to nil parts of their bodies. Doctor Kellln discovered that mosquito larvae had certain cells In these tubes that secreted a fatty sub-stance, which served to keep the water out. Hut upon experimenting with them, using oil, liquids that dissolve fats, he found that If these protective secretions were thus dissolved, the breathing tubes of the larva filled up with water and the hapless "wig-glers" drowned. He wrot a pencil note describing the acclden. and the spot on the mountain side where he was stranded.
