Show MARCH 9, 1983 All For The PI sSake ciThcy deserre cvcrr bit of glory and honor that could come their way Coach Doug Moon By KEITH DUNCAN Journal Sports - Fresh off the impressive vicLAYTON tory over Sky View that gave Layton a state consolation trophy in the state playoffs, it was head concluded recently coach Doug Moon that uttered the words, It's not for the coaches, not for the parents and not for anybody but the kids. 4-- A IM SO HAPPY for the kids. They deserve every bit of honor and glory that could come their way. I hope they never forget this experience, because its going to live with me for the rest of my life. The sixth place in the 1983 tournament came as a result of three consecutive victories over Cyprus, Skyline and Sky View. Layton got hot after being crushed by Brighton in the opening round, winning their next three games by a whopping total of 62 points. MOON SAYS he is going to hold a special place inside for each one of his '82-8- 3 kids. The following is a brief review of the primary varsity kids that made th good things happen. Jeff Moon could talk all night about the special little far as my wife and I are concerned. Jeff as gift had athletic character from the very beginning, like two or three years old. I HES THE KIND of kid that never says and 145 pounds. quit, despite being only Hes got as big a heart as anyone in athletics, said Coach Moon. It was Jeff who connected on numerous beautiful passes in the tournament and just as many swift long outside shots. Jeffs finest effort in the tournament, offensive wise, was outburst against Skyline. his 5-- Brad Merrill was the apple of Doug Moons eye through four games of the state tournament. Though the Layton senior struggled through most of the season, his tournament effort was supreme. IT WAS JEFF who more all year. His solid defense, and assists inside, solidified the start to finish, said the or less carried us outside shooting the ballclub from father. What did Jeff have to say. I really dont think we could have beaten Brighton the opening night, they were just a superb team. But I knew we could come back and take the consolation. I BELIEVE when Keith Williams left our team, the pressure to look for him all the time vanished. We began playing as a team. Brad Merrill THROUGH the final five or six ball games of the season, Passey played brilliantly in comparison to what he had to offer last November and December. Jeff probably improved over the past two weeks on his basketball skills more three or than some kids improved over the entire season. It got to the point that we were using him far more than what we thought we would, but his progress wouldnt deny him the opportunity, said Moon. Tom Kidd With Merrill it was like cream rising to the top. He struggled through the season like we all did, including myself, but his tournament performance was literally the best we could have wanted as a coaching staff, said Moon. WITHOUT A DOUBT Brad is probably the best defensive player that Ive ever coached which he showed time and time again in the tournament. Thats a lot of talk being in basketball 18 to 20 years," continued the coach. Merrill knows Moons philosophy inside and out and voiced his feelings about it, He (Coach Moon) stresses team defense and after awhile it became a special pride to come through with a solid defensive game. Two teams can score all night, but someone has got to play defense before a winner is finally declared. MOON WHO was extremely pleased with Merrills maturity at seasons end, stated that hed miss the departing senior. "I cant describe the feeling right now, said Merrill after the consolation win, Its one of the best things that will probably ever happen to me. Its not like winning the state title, but something close to it. Brett Campbell Brett struggled through the part of the season that we all struggled, but when we really needed him, he came through beautifully," said Moon. CAMPBELL described the late season winning as the funnest part of my life so far. At 4 and considered the Laytons primary big man all season, Brett usually came through in critical moments. He enjoyed his finest state tournament game in the Cyprus mauling by scoring 25 points and collecting 14 rebounds. WHEN KEITH Williams left the Layton team, it may have affected Brett more than anyone since the two were pretty close. I honestly felt worse when he left, mainly because hes a good friend. We usually played together on Saturdays and every other chance A lot of people have questioned me about Tom, why do 1 play him because he can't s ore? ITS TRUE that he does limit our offense because he doesn't have the shooting skills the others have, but what he lacks there he makes up for in hustle and hard work on defense. Ive felt for a long time that you've got to I give a little bit somewhere in basketball. If it have to give a little on the offense to get what takes defensively, that's the way we'll go. I REALIZE we're giving it up offensively, but I didnt have a tougher nosed and harder working kid sitting on the bench than Tom. That's why he played for me." said Moon. Kidd stated, As long as 1 can help on defense, I believe there is enough plavers on offense to get the job done." Steve Pearce Steve started off in a starting role, but others were a little more physical which we needed in the front line position. BUT STEVE was always our first guy off the bench to help on the front line. He came in and played well, especially in the end where he realized he needed to become a little more physical. He responded to the challenge just like everyone else did. 6-- we got. But I knew we had to fill the gap and go said Campbell. COACH MOON saw the Williams depar- on, ture affecting Campbells play, but noticed Campbell made up his mind that he wanted to help the club do their best and he did it. Jeff Passey This junior forward didnt see a lot of playing time in the beginning, but down the stretch of season became invaluable to the Lancers. Toward the end, especially in practice and in the tournament game against Sky View. Steve did some very creditable things for our said Moon. team, Darryl Martin "We really had no plans for Darryl in the beginning but after working himself into starting roles for the sophomore and junior varsity teams, his play was possessed with so much confidence that we could hardly overlook him. Thats why we decided to use him on the varsity level. DARYL RARELY turns over the ball and has the ability to put the ball into the hole," Coach Moon stated. In the contest against Sky View, Martin converted seven of eight freethrows. During the course of the season, Martin helped the Layton cause by chipping in a couple of game-- inning shots. w Davis Gymnasts Enter Season By KEITH DUNCAN Journal Sports KAYSVILLE - As Michael Brown, the third year head coach of the Davis High womens gymnastics, says, You may see fancier gymnastics on a team outside the school, but youd have to search pretty hard to find a group of girls who work as hard and stay as close as this group is. -- THERE MIGHT be a tint of loyalty to her Davis kids when Brown says something like that, but after witnessing the Davis gals in action, there wouldnt be a number in the crowd that would refute her. The 1983 womens gymnastics season just kicked off another season last week with Brown and her troops jumping right into the middle of things. THE NEXT Davis meet will be staged Thursday, March 17 at Davis High with warm-up- s beginning at 2 p.m. Brown, who once taught P.E., admits that when she took over the reigns of the Davis program she knew very little about gymnastics competition. Its been a learning experience for me all the way through, she said. BUT ITS been the finest experience too, Brown stated, You wouldnt believe the tremendous and close group of girls weve got here. They are so supportive of each other. Many of the Davis gals began their gymnastics careers in junior high and have gradually worked themselves into the high school scene. JUNIOR DEBBIE Symonds may be one of the finest gymnasts in the area. She has been a national placer in tumbling where her skills spurned her into tremendous heights. The Davis junior has had to learn the gymnastic routines of dance and has done so with such siwftness and ease that she now ranks as one of the finest in the state in floor exercises. Tracy Sumner, only a sophomore, also comoptional division as petes in the does Symonds. In Davis first meet of the season, Tracy performed some moves that had the crowd taking an extra breath or two. Her back g tuck on the beam was simply for the spectators. nerve-rackin- THE COMPULSORY group of Davis girls begins with Jill Niederhauser. Its here, according to Brown, that the meets are won. Other compulsory participants include Amy Beckstrom on the vault, Holly Nelson on the bars and Liz McMillian in The gathering of Davis girls happens to make up perhaps the largest team in the state, some 25 to 26 girls to be exact. Davis High happens to represent the only womens team north of Bountiful. ASSISTING Brown this year has been Kirk Meier from Weber State College. Meier, a full time student at WSC and also a Tallymen, has seemingly been a big help to Brown and the Davis crew. Winning isnt everything when it comes to gymnastics, at least thats the kind of feeling that Brown and Meier send out. The twos efforts however, may very well produce a product that neither ever thought possible. ITS ALL A combination of hours of hard work blended with beauty and expertise.
