Show SEPTEMBER 2, 1986 Ready, set, go... Layton wins, 3821 Layton football, was even a hero on the next Bountiful series when he saved a touchdown by nailing Bountifuls Brett Parkinson after a 24 yard run. For the night, Layton racked up 435 yards of total offense, compared to Bountifuls 254. It was a football fans delight to watch Lovelace and Reid, a pair of backs that Wood calls "the best two running backs Ive ever been around in high school. Lovelace ended up with two scores on the ground and a touchdown pass. He carried 14 times for 138 yards. That was over nine yards per carry for him. Reid had one touchdown on the ground, along with 15 carries for 153 yards. Lovelace was excited after the game, saying, Weve been playing together, at least about 17 of us, for most of our football playing days. We really want it bad this By KEITH DUNCAN LAYTON - Former Lancer football coach Gary Hansen summed up Laytons surprising victory over Bountiful the best. Weve not seen that brand of football here in 9 or 10 years. It brought back some very vivid memories, he said. No question about it, it appears the Big Blue are back. With the Braves a favorite coming into the contest, mainly because of several key players returning and every major poll picking them in the Top 3, Layton denied theyd read the polls and literally let Bountiful have it right between the teeth. The win had eyebrows raising all over the county that night and the next morning. But it could have been worse too, had Layton not fumbled twice within their own 30 year line which led to two of Bountifuls scores. Second year head coach Joe Wood was visible elated with the victory, but continued to dish off praise to the players and his assistants. They clobbered us good last said Wood, So it year, 28-feels good to turn the tables around. I cant say enough good about our kids. Weve been going hard for several weeks now and their preparation was the key to our victory. Ive always said that good things will happen to those that work hard and I can flat promise you these kids have been working their fannies off. But they arent satisfied either. I asked them that after the game and the fire in their eyes told me no. I also take my hat off to our assistants. I could rant about each one of them for a great job they did, they were super. Wood did take time to praise each member of this staff, a group that includes Tom Moore, Wes Wilcken, Brad Hawkins, Russ Jones, Kenny Mack, Mike Hansen, Scott Applegate and Andy Johnson. -- 38-2- 1 pre-seas- nt 0, Bountiful won the toss and moved straight downfield. I can't say enough good about the line upfront. They were terrific all night. Barker, one of those who helped open some holes upfront, commented, Bountiful is a solid team, but I think we just outplayed them tonight. Our line really started coming together on Tuesday or Wednesday and things have just gotten better since. Barker moved with his family to Layton on July 27th. He is just a junior. The answer comes this Friday night in Bountiful when both and Layton square off in either teams second contest. The game is set to start at -- View-mo- nt pre-seas- 7:30 p.m. The Vikings contained Clearfield all too well in their opener, coming away with a shut out ( and with a feeling they arent anywhere where they want to be. On the other hand, Layton surprised the heck out of Bountiful by piling up 435 yards of total offense 14-- and scoring 38 points on a team that is defensively sound. What does it mean? Come to Viewmont High on Friday and find The Vikings have a healthy Randy Johnson back who assists Warren Hatch and is the defensive coordinator. After a year of suffering through painful back problems and not being able to give full concentration to building the Viking is excited about 1986 and the things he saw in the defense, Johnson over Clearfield. Johnson was elated with the play 14-- 0 of linebacker Tyrone Hess who was Mr. Everything. He unassisted tackaccounted for les, seven assisted, one quarterback sack, one blocked pass and one interception. He was all over said Hatch, he has great 1 1 instincts. Ray Hacked also had a good game as a defensive lineman and Jason Burningham stole a pass on defense as well. Viewmont will have to contend Last week, Holly Cook of Bountiful, placed first in the Coupe Des Alpes Figure skating competition in Obersdorf, West Germany. with a very talented Layton back-fiel- d duo of William Reid and Richard Lovelace. Reid had one touchdown and 153 yards rushing against Bountiful and Lovelace had three touchdowns and 138 yards rushing. Even junior Carl Darby is dangerous coming out of the backfield. Then youve got to contend with the junior QB, in Troy Murray. for 119 yards Murray was against Bountiful with no interceptions. He successfully found Chris Parrish on four passes for 98 yards. Neither Viewmont or Layton feels like theyve used everything theyve got on defense or offense. Second year head coach Joe Wood commented, We havent even tested of our passing attack and weve still got numerous more option attacks. Were excited about getting out again and testing a whole lot more stuff out. But Im concerned about Viewmont. Its our first game on the road and more than that, I think the returning people at Viewmont remember how we got after them last year. Theyll be cranked up to knock us off, we being fresh from just knocking off the number three team (Bountiful) in the state. 6-- three-quarte- rs It really concerns me. we, as a coaching staff plan on bringing our kids back to reality after their big win over Bountiful. But the man Wood had the most praise for was his QB. "Murray is a winner and hell be a key for us all year long. And you cant forget the offensive line. I was really pleased with their opening game, but they can get better. The Layton offense against the Viking defense may get the most talk before the game, but the Viking offense against the Lancer defense may have their say in who wins this game.
