In other words, as we get older, our hearing naturally becomes less acute. Presbycusis is a form of sensorineural hearing loss (nerve loss). Sensorineural hearing loss is the most common type of hearing impairment and most people with this type of loss can be helped through the use of a hearing aid. Q. My family practice physician recently gave me some literature on hearing loss. I think I have a problem, what should 1 do? A. If you suspect a hearing loss, your first step could be a hearing test. A hearing test may be performed by various hearing health professionals, including your local hearing aid specialist. Some hearing problems can be helped through surgery or medicine, however, the best assistance available for most persons is amplification through the use of a hearing aid. Making Family Life More Fun is provided u LUZIANNE CAFE CREME Makes 4 servings cream, softened 14 cup Baileys Irish Cream (or Irish Whiskey) HEARING FACTS AND FANCIES Q. Just how do we hear, anyway? A. As sound passes through the ear it sets up a chain reaction that could be compared to the toppling of a row of dominos. The various elements of the ear pick up, amplify, and send along the vibrations to the brain, the brain then interprets the sounds. For example, pressure waves (vibrations) are collected by the outer ear and are funneled through the waxy ear canal. Vibrations then knock against the eardrum membrane. Next, the bones of the middle ear pick up and amplify the vibrations. Then, fluid in the inner ear vibrates and stimulates special nerve endings called hair cells. Finally, the hair cells send electrical impulses along the auditory nerve to the brain, then these impulses are transformed into what you perceive as sound. The difference between the vibrations picked up by each ear create a stereo effect and help the brain distinguish where the sound is coming from. Q. I have often heard the term presbycusis used in discussions on the effects of aging, what does it mean? A. Presbycusis (Prezbe-ah-ksis) is the progressive loss of auditory acuity as a result of the aging process. Technically it is the atrophy, wither Nearly a third of all coffee brewed in the United States is wasted. A refreshing new way to beat the heat is to use leftover brewed coffee in iced coffee and delicious coffee cooler recipes. Nobody knows who first drank iced coffee, but most experts feel it must be an American innovation. According to Steven Gregg, of the Coffee Development Group, a good rule of thumb when brewing iced coffee is to use about three ounces of coffee to every 64 ounces (12 gallon) of hot water. Gregg recommends a rich, premium dark roast or a flavored grind since the coffee flavor of these blends tend to stand up and taste fuller against the diluting effects of the ice. A rich, flavorful, premium roast such as Luzianne Coffee with Chicory is considered a good choice by many coffee connoisseurs. Gregg cautions against using tired or old coffee thats been standing around on the stove for hours. He suggests taking any coffee thats still warm and fresh from the pot and storing it in a sealed jar in the refrigerator. Kept this way, coffee can be safely stored for up to a week. Its also possible, notes Gregg, to pour this coffee into ice cube trays and freeze. It can be used with warmer coffee or as ice cubes to double the coffee flavor in any iced coffee drink. 1 specialists. of ground over 50 wood floor in- east Bountiful home, 292-210- search of Richmond, Virginia, an overwhelming majority of those polled said the type of surface materials used in appliance construction would be an important factor in their purchasing decisions. dent hearing instrument Inc BOUNTIFUL EXECUTIVE Seasons The true meaning of success, for many people, lies not in making money, but in helping others.
