Show Kscalante High School students Nadine Alvey, Tpmi Coleman, Keoki Gaelea'i and John Cat- Sawmill Managers Meet At Escalante Session ESCALANTE - Escalante sawmills, Inc., was host for the general managers' meeting of Allied Forest Products April 14 and 15. This was the first time the annual meeting has been held in Escalante since Allied purchased the mill in late 1977. Management personnel from White Sands Forest Products and the T-Bird retail lumber yards, based in Alamogordo, N.M. and the management from Wyoming Sawmills in Sheridan, Wy. attended. The informal meetings covered items of common interest, including sales outlook, logging plans, and review of general operations. Although 1982 was a slow year for all branches of the company, the managers expect 1983 to be much better and some mills are already back on full schedule with extra hours to meet market demands. Steven Steed, manager of the Escalante division, anticipates that mull worked a total of 40 hours to decorate jym for junior prom. 1983 will be the mill's best year in sales and production. There are plans to log approximately 13 to 14" million board feet from Dixie National Forest, plus upgrade the sawmill operation to increase competitive productivity. At present, most of the local lumber is marketed for mobile home parts, door jambs, window frames and some furniture. The rest is in one inch boards sent to Arizona and Texas "for interior home construction, and in low grade palette stock. According to Steed, the visiting managers were "very impressed with the neat and well-laid-out operations" at the local sawmill, and the surrounding scenic area. They toured the woods operation and the mill, and had a cook-out at Calf Creek campground |
