Having biked for years, there is always a simple way to spot a fellow cyclist that is driving an automobile—it is by their courteousness and understanding of how cars relate to bicyclist on the road, and the dangers that they inherently posses. Before calling someone inconsiderate or stupid, it is important to really read and understand the laws pertaining to cars and bicyclists. These laws were not created on a whim but with the understanding that a 150 lbs cyclist really has no chance against a 7000 lbs SUV owner who does not understand cycling. When cyclists are riding two abreast (as allowed in Section 41-6a-1105 of the Utah Code), there is usually a reason for this, such as an unsafe condition that would not allow a car and bicycles to occupy the same lane; please look at the highway area near the dam and north of Huntsville as prime examples. Cyclists ride like this to force cars behind them to slow down and wait for a safe and legal area to pass. In other words, when the shoulder is unsafe or non existent, a cyclist may move over into the lane and ride two abreast even if it impedes the normal flow of traffic in their lane. Ask any avid rider and they will tell you the absolute terror they feel when they are passed unsafely and illegally by a Suburban on a narrow double lined road only to be forced off the road when oncoming traffic inevitably appears.
