Show THE DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE OFFENSE NO U ' TA H 1 1 iI J 'j A q The Wednesday, January 8, 2003 Northwestern Gets Black Female Dean Chronicle Feature Columnist Network Promotes Cash Over Character FOX onday was the big night! Coming off the heels of one of the most dramatic profes sional football games ever played, things are finally getting back to normal at FOX. The folks who spearheaded the seminal and ground-breakin- g series in which "Cops," topless prostitutes who are coming down hard off their most recent heroin binges are arrested on interstates across the country every week, debuted their newest brainchild "Joe Millionaire," Monday night. Now, before I go any further, let me just say that FOX has also been responsible for truly brilliant pieces of television Americana with programs like "The Simpsons," "Married With Children" and "America's Most Wanted," which promptly jumped ship to NBC. But, I digress. In the midst of one of the greatest football games ever played, FOX had ample time to plug its newest flaming pile. The concept is simple: A guy lies to women, convinces them he's rich, courts them vigorously and I'm assuming reveals the awful truth to them in the heartrending final episode. It's bad enough 25 women will be made absolute fools on national television, but anybody g who suffered through the of pains "Temptation Island" knows degrading women is nothing new to FOX. I also know that if some woman from Alabama had to court 20 guys, it would be a short-live- d series since the males wouldn't care if they were lied to or not. The fact they could go home and share their mating stories over lukewarm beer with their friends would be enough. No, the problem I have with this newest vehicle of female exploitation is that FOX, a network which reaches millions of viewers every night, is promoting deceit and dollars over the honesty and loyalty it takes to make a working relationship fruitful. The network that in recent years has devolved into airing the exploits of people of the lowest common denominator in our society has managed to bend even lower, with no signs of stopping. That's fine with me. If Anna Nicole Smith and the Osbournes can creep into my life and make me vomit seven colors every week, I guess FOX's newest programming move is understandable. FOX has wonderfully insightful and poignant sports commentators and has made the NFL, Major League Baseball and even NASCAR d appealing. I have been a and rabid sports fan for much of my life, and I will always love the New England Patriots like my firstborn child. FOX has shown flashes of great coverage. But crap like "Joe Millionaire" and'its blatant promotion of cash over human character and its portrayal of women as shallow whores is both undesirable and unforgiv- Daily Northwestern Northwestern University role models. As colleges struggle to provide enough resources for this increase in Scroll Brigham Young University-Ida- ho student population, financial experts project that the price of a college education will continue to rise and high school students will find it increasingly difficult to get accepted to a top school. "If your child is interested in going to one of the most selective institutions in the country, his or her odds of getting into that institution are going to be relatively low because there's going to be tremendous competition," Bob Brock, president of the Educational Marketing REXBURG, Idaho Because of the dramatic increase in birth rates during the 1980s, officials from the United States Department of Education are projecting an high in college enrollment during the next decade.
