Chronicle Sports Editor "Hp SAT r 1 s The U men's basketball team got a bit of disheartening news before its 9 win over St. Mary's (Calif.) 65-5- li Monday. cnnrl a and score good, grades, Dut for some reason the U.S. has a condescending Majerus has had to deal with foreign players getting through the NCAA Clearinghouse, as the U has been the home to China's Ma Jian, Finland's Hanno Mottola as well as a few Canadian players. "We had all the green lightsIt's frustrating. We have only 10 scholarship players our numbers arc depleted." "It's a situation where everyone throws their hands up ard nothing gets done," Majerus said. Though it is unlikely the Aussie would have played this season, Majerus said Bogut would have been better off joining the team and sitting out here whiic learning the system instead of staying in Australia. Bogut, who just turned 18 in November, averaged 17.3 points and 7.3 rebounds a game for the AIS team in a tournament in Germany in April rbrunnerchronicle.utah.edu that comes from the NFL's AFC East. But then I got to thinking, Ya know, the Miami Dolphins deserve their own special award, for their unmatched display of chokcry on the grandest scale. The Thins take home the 'Yeah, and the Sun Rises in the East' Award. Like the cosmic forces of nature, Miami always manages to suffer a collapse. Did any of us expect in '02? different any We have our first tie! The dual winners for the 'I'm Not Really a Football Coach, I Just Play One on T.V.' Award arc the Lions' Marty Morn-hinwe- g and Dave clinched when, Campo. Mornhinwcg after winning an overtime coin toss, he elected to kick off, then watched as the Bears promptly won on the opening drive. Did no one tell him it was sudden death? Bonus points go to. Campo for his performance on HBO's Hard Knocks, where he accomplished the unthinkable by actually using up every known cliche in the English language. The Mariah Carey in Glitter Award goes to the year's worst, most embarrassing performance. And while the Olympic figure skating judges, the U.S. men's basketball team, and the perennial Bengals gave them a run for their money, no one outdid the New York Mets who, after turning their roster into a who's-wh- o of finished 26.5 games behind Atlanta. Special kudos to Mike Piazza for his son's hand. Well Ms. Burk, while you may think you're making an impact or "breaking down barriers," you're way off track. This is not the 1960s, and these arc not historical injustices you're exposing. Not only does Burk have no legal backing for her fight, the fact is that women haven't exactly been clamoring to get into Augusta. She's fighting just for the sake of fighting. Please Ms. Burk, before I go get my violin, dry your eyes and find something important to fight for. Many arc already on this guy's bandwagon, but you better jump off quick. For it's time to award Carson Palmer the Stick a Fork in Me, I'm Done Award. Why? Already, he had the Hcisman Curse working against him. Even if he could get past that, he won't be able to overcome getting drafted by the Bengals with the draft's first pick. His pro career was a shaky proposition anyway;' now that he's all but officially headed to Cincy, he might as well go back to baseball. The Emphysema Award, given to the year's top choke artist, is kind of a sore spot with me. The Sacramento Kings would have waltzed away with the NBA crown had they not inexplicably forgotten how to play basketball down the stretch against the hated late-seas- All-Star- On Friday night, one of the most accomplished programs at the U will begin a march to try to add another national title. After making it to the Super Six last season and finishing fourth in the national championships, the U gym- nastics team will have to deal with losing three seniors and also the loss of a ' rf..j':A Role Playing Games , J i 9 ti Natalie Nicoloff and Gabriella Onodi. "Several of them have never even seen a college competition. It is critical that they make an increasingly important contribution as the season goes on," U gymnastics coach Greg Marsden said. Onodi arrived over the holidays and still needs training to get into competition shape after a layover. The other three have been great competitors for their respective national teams and will be looked at to contribute this season. "I'm anxious for our freshmen to experience their first college meet," Marsden said. The one player that will carry the team this season is senior Theresa Kulikowski, who has amassed countless awards in her three years as a Red Rock. NCAA Kulikowski is a three-tim- e NCAA Champion and has won 98 events in her career. However, Kulio has been plagued with injuries and will start the season competing in two events. The other two 2002 are juniors Melissa Vituj and Veronique LeClerc. Vituj earned her status on the vault and beam while LeClerc was on the bars. The Utes have to overcome injuries to gymnasts beside Kulikowski. One tumbler coming off a major injury this season is Kylee Wagner, who had to miss all of last season due to an ankle injury. Wagner received an extra year of eligibility due to a medical hardship. British Jansher Kahn, the Open champ who triumphantly returned to the court after three years away. Bravo, Jansher! Somebody quick! Get Ahmad Rashad some oxygen and a tissue! Stat! What's happened? Why, it's the third retirement of his favorite person, of course! That, obviously, would be the NBAs Michael Jordan, winner of the Catch a Falling Star Award. I know he's a basketball god, but it's just fun to pick at him once in a while. In his time with the Washington franchise, from the time he took over the front office to right now, he hasn't done a thing with that team. Not one thing. His sporadic, often poor play has only hurt the Wiz the past two seasons. Let's hope he stays retired this time. . - -- returns after gaining an 10-ti- V J award on bars. Another landslide Doobie winner the John Henry Williams, 2002's Scrub O' the Year. Son of baseballer Ted Williams, John Henry had his father cryogenically frozen for the alleged purpose of selling the DNA sometime is us now-infamo- Hall-of-Fa- down the road. While he was at it, why didn't he just piss on the old man's tombstone? Seriously, is there a law against shooting people? And finally, the most prestigious Doobie of them all a sort of MVP for all sports. Boy, was it was a tough choice. With stiff competition from Mario Lemieux, Michael Vick, Serena Williams and Ricky Williams, the honor of the Sweeter Than Honey Award goes to the Jets' Chad Pen- nington. He took New York from records of and 5 to the AFC East title. Plus, he will lead the Jets to victory over the Raiders this week. You can count on that. You'll see there was no one sweeter this year than Pennington. Chris welcomes feedback at: -4 2-- m recover from injury after hurting her achilles in 2001, which sidelined her for most of the season. Sophomore Grit Hoffman missed all but one meet last year after suffering from an injury. One gymnast who will play a factor in the Utes' success and who is healthy is sophomore Annabeth others, who either are coming off injuries or are only entering the first year of college competition. Not only is a shot at the national title at stake, but when the N0.1 UCLA Bruins come in to the Huntsman Cenhome winning ter on Friday, a streak will be on the line. The streak is amazing, considering it started before any of the current team members were born. akudiyachronicle.utah.edu 23-ye- Now Open 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM Great Coffee srl & danish donuts Gourmet Coffee ar If fii Food ft lattt coffee Eber-l- e. Bogut was supposed to join the Utes in December, but now he will play with the Australian Junior National team before joining the Utes in August or September, Majerus said. The NCAA Clearinghouse, the body that decides whether or not college athletes are eligible to compete in NCAA athletics, notified the Utes that Bogut would not be eligible for play during the 2002-0- 3 basketball season because he has yet to take a few core classes that are required. Majerus is puzzled because Bogut was cleared by the U registrar's office before his transcripts were sent to the NCAA Clearinghouse. "I went to the university administration and they said everything was all right," Majerus said. "We aren't our own registrar... nor should we be." Majerus said the ruling is a shame because Bogut is a good student.
