Show HILLTOP Tl TIMES October 18, 2007 Firefighters welcomed at Hill Field Elementary School by essay winners Hilltop Times staff F ire Prevention Week was observed in various ways at Hill Field Elementary School, last week. Students not only had a visit from the Hill AFB Fire Department, but winners of an essay contest also had the chance to spend a day with firefighters. The top essays are published below. "Why You Need an Emergency Exit" by Di-Di Lewis, fifth grade: The reason why you should have an emergency exit is in case of a fire at your house. A fire can kill you if you don't , have an emergency exit. If you were in a fire ancl you didn't have an emergency exit you would die. A lot of people have died because they did not have an emergency exit for when their house catches on fire. I had been across the street from a fire that had risen 50 feet into the air. The people did not have an emergency exit. The people could have died, but four fire trucks had come to blow out the fire, channel 12 had come half way through the fire. I was the first to see the fire because I had been looking out the window then I got my older sister Jessica, who got my grandma who called the fire department which came 30 minutes later. The people were sort of fine (there old fashioned slug bug car had melted.) That is why you should have an emergency exit. "My Fire Escape" by Justin Yeske, sixth grade: If there were a fire in my house, I would not need to feel the door, because I know it can burn you if there were a fire. If there is smoke I would not run. I would crawl as fast as I could through the house so that the smoke doesn't get into my face and lungs. I would not go back for anything. I would get out of the house. Not doing what I am supposed to do would cause my parents to go look for me and that could cause them to be harmed. But if there is a fire in the hall way; I have to use sheets to make an escape rope. I would tie it to my bed frame and go out my window and if it doesn't go the entire way I would slide down as far as I could and then drop down. When I get out of the house, we all would meet at Mrs. Stephanie's yard, across the street. Then my family and I would knock on the door and ask to call 911. That way we can get the fire department to put out the fire. Then after the fire is out, we can go in a get our stuff that did not burned. We can rent a hotel and buy more stuff later. The important part is that we get out safely. Life is more important than material wealth. We will be careful so another fire will not happen again. Prevention is the best way to save lives. I am thankful for the Fire Dept. because they make a difference between life and death. If it wasn't for their sacrifices thousands of people wouldn't Hill Air Force Base firefighter Mike Barruss shows Hill Field Elementary School fifth-grade essay winner Di Di Lewis how to use a fire hose during a recent firefighter for a day event. be with their families today. One day I hope to make as much a difference as a fireman does. "Why Fire Escape Plans are Important," by Jody Bussiere, fifth grade: Why is it good to have a fire escape plan? A fire escape plan is good to have at any time. You should practice yours twice a year. Without an escape plan you could die. My family's escape plan is to get out of the house and meet by the tree at the end of our yard. According to Dr. John Hell- erstedt, 4,000 people die each year from house fires. 1,100 of those people are children under the age of 15. Sadly, most of those could have been prevented if the families had made an escape plan. Each escape plan should include two possible exits from each room and a family meeting place. Also, if you are sleeping, keep your door closed. This will give you more time to get out. If one of us was stuck upstairs, we would have to climb out of the window and jump off the edge, about a ten foot drop. I've learned to jump •.»_••»•- •- — *-. RESCUE Xh;. [/ /^ '! The carbon dioxide level is something that you should watch out for. If you breathe in too much carbon dioxide, you will have less of a chance of living. If you are in a fire you should cover your mouth with a shirt and crawl on the floor. If you have an escape plan your chances of living get higher. Without an escape plan your chances get lower.
