Show HILLTOP TIMES TIMES October 18, 2007 "... It's a social outlet. There are a lot of spouses who are deployed, or spouses working odd shifts. You have this sense of community, so you're not isolated. You immediately have a group of friends." DEB TANZI, "member at large" on the board of directors of the Hill Officers' Spouses' Club CLUB The Hill AFB Officers' Spouses' Club welcomed many new members during its September meeting. The group counts about 70 members but is always on the lookout for more, says president Fields Watson. It serves as a social outlet, a grounding mechanism for newcomers, and is involved in many acts of service and support to base personnel and their families. iiIlill From page 1 known spouse around the base, Col. Mike Close, Retired, the husband of Maj. Gen. Kathleen Close, the Ogden Air Logistic Center commander. "I met my wife in the military," said Watson. "I was a captain and she was a lieutenant. Our first assignment was at Hanscom AFB, outside of Boston." That former lieutenant, Maryann, is now a colonel, and a group commander for the 84th Space & C3I Sustainment Group. "I am a house husband, have been staying home for the past 14 years," Fields Watson said. "When Maryann and I were married, I was working for NASA and she was at the Pentagon." He said it's "so far so good" of the arrangement. The couple have two children, Fielding, 15, and Amelia, 14. Of the club, Tanzi said "it's a social outlet. There are a lot of spouses who are deployed, or spouses working odd shifts. You have this sense of community, so you're not isolated. You immediately have a group of friends. "It depends what field a person is in, but they can move often, kids are in different schools. It's hard to feel any sense of where you are," she said. "I think people who take advantage (of such groups) get the most out of their moves." The group normally meets the second Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at Club Hill. While the social aspect is important, charitable efforts are also a big part of the group's mission, Watson said. "Our main charitable goal is to award scholarships to the military community," he said. "Last year we were able to award $20,000 in scholarships, and also gave $4,000 to various charitable endeavors. In the past, we've had two bazaars each year, with one coming up Nov. 15, and another in the spring. We generate money by renting tables to the vendors, and sponsor various other smaller fundraising activities. "We try to support the base," he continued. "We donated to the Airman's Attic Junior Enlisted Center, and last year donated $1,000 to Hill Field Elementary so they could buy books." A few national charities are also supported, such as the Air Force Village. "One of our big things was that we partnered with the Airmen & Family Readiness Center on base to work on the Hill Hero Dolls that are given to the dependents of deployed military members, do that both financially and with manpower." Social efforts range from a Texas Holdem group started last year to a new digital scrapbooking group in addition to traditional scrapbooking.
