The College of Eastern Utah hosted competetive speech and drama tournament featured six schools, including the University of Nevada, Las Vegas; Ricks College; Utah Technical College, Provo; College of Eastern Utah; Snow College and Dixie. It extended their consecutive sweepstakes wins to 1 . Thirty four of Dixies 125 points came from Readers Theatre, with a first place finish by Childrens Fears, and a second place by Johnny Pye and the Fool Killer. In addition to readers theatre, Dixie pulled in six first place trophies, three second place trophies, one third place award and the first place overall sweepstakes honor. Chris Oldham, from Bountiful, Utah, anchored the individual events wins by capturing first place in poetry interpretation, prose interpretation, and combining with Doug Debeham, from Anchorage, Alaska, to take first place in duet acting. Hurricanes Michelle Shamo garnered two first place honors with her speeches in communication analysis and informative speaking. Verlin Hinton, also from Hurricane, captured first place in persuasive speaking, while Suzanne Bowers picked up third place in persuasive speaking, and second place in informative speaking. The other two second place honors were won by Deltas Lollie Joye Lyman who competed in after din 1 ner speaking and poetry interpretation. We feel especially good about the win, commented Michael Woodward, one of the forensic coaches at Dixie, because it included UNLVs team, and because our students finally came together as a team. After the First two rounds of competition, it looked like we would not even be in the running, but those who broke into final rounds, cashed in on the awards. It was very important for us to do well at this meet, added Donald Hinton, the other forensic coach at Dixie, because there are critical turning points for a squad, and the first time out Winter Quarter is one of those times. If we had lost, frequently a slump will occur and sometime the squad never comes out of it for the rest of the year. Hopefully, the students will realize their need to continue the work that they are doing and we will again have a nationally ranked forensic squad. Dixies next tournament as a squad will be the Central Arizona College tournament in early February. It is the intention of the college to provide a permanent accessway to the track, making it available to the public at anytime of the day, any time of the year, except those times when it is used for classes or track meets. In addition to the planting, the project involves building a concrete wall along the north end between the track and the parking lot as well as a concrete drainage for water removal in front of the stadium. He went on to discuss several areas on campus where the grounds crew is doing some where bushes and some trees have outlived their usefulness and are either a hazzard, maintenance problem or are unsightly. These locations include east of the maintenance building, around the Shenandoah parking lot and in front of the science building. |
