Show WILL SPEND MILLIONS. Railroads Will Go to Heavy Expense I in Utah. Millions of dollars will be spent in Utah in the construction of the. two Salt Lake cut-offs, which, it was semiofficially semi-officially announced from Omaha, will be built this year. The building of the new line for the Union Pacific and' for the Southern Pacific will necessitate the employment of hundreds hun-dreds of men for some time. Besides the large amount of grading and track laying to be done, at least two and possibly more tunnels must be built. On the Union Pacific a tunnel tun-nel must be built through Big mountain moun-tain if the Emigration canyon route is chosen, and probably through Little mountain. On the Southern Pacific, a tunnel will probably be necessary through the mountains near YVrathalls pass. The greatest advantage in distances, curves and grades will be in the building build-ing of the Southern Pacific cut-off. The distance between Lucin and Ogden is 146 miles over the existing line, and from Ogden to Echo is forty miles, a total of 186 miles. According to the new Southern Pacific survey, the distance dis-tance between Lucin and Salt Lake is 10S.5 miles, and from Salt Lake to Echo fifty-eight miles, a total of 165.5 miles. This is a saving of 10.5 miles. It is possible, however, that still more distance may be saved by running through Chalk creek canyon from near Coalville. A cut-off clear to Ev.-inston or farther east may be decided upon. It is stated that the grades and curves . may be greatly reduced by the new lines, which will save considerable consider-able expense in. operation. |
