Show Government Spends Thousands For Zion Park Improvement Construction activities in Zion National park, one of Utah's scenic and historic attractions, according to E. T. Scoyon, park superintendent, represent a high water mark in the history of the park. Three operations opera-tions are employing a total of 262 men, and are engaged in work which will represent an expenditure of approximately ap-proximately $770,000 when completed. complet-ed. The largest single project is the Zion-Mt. Carmel road, on which there is a tunnel 5,800 feet long, besides other spectacular features. The Nevada Contracting company is rushing work with a crew of 210 men, and according to latest advices from engineers of the bureau of public roads, the job is practically on schedule, and was 45 per cent complete at the end of April. If the present rate of progress is maintained, maintain-ed, the work on the second section should be underway early in the fall. In addition to the aliove government govern-ment project, park officials are engaged en-gaged on an improvement program for .tha -kvrinistrative area caKin; for an expenditure of $12.00(1. This includes a warehouse at $1."I10; a residence for the chief clerk at S2.500; a water system at $-1,000; and a sewago disposal system at $1,000. In addi-ion to these items there is- beinsr expended, or authorized authoriz-ed for expenditure, a total of $",000 for camp ground improvements. The Interior Department appropriation ; act aslo provides a total of $2400 ( for administration protection, and ! maintenance of the park during the coming year. Aside from regular government activities, the Utah Parks Company : is carrying out an improvement pro-! pro-! gram on which the contract price is ; $50,000, and the contractor has a force of 35 men on the ground. In addition to the pool, there is being built additional cabins which will increase the capacity of the camp by about, 60 guests each nieht. The water system is also being improved, im-proved, and a modern sewage disposal dis-posal system is being built. With the exception of .? the Zion-Mt. Zion-Mt. Carmel hichway, all of these improvements im-provements will be completed early in the present season. All roads leadinc to the park are in excellent condition at present, and aside from the fact that no regular bus service will he available until June 1st, the park is being operated on mid-season scale. |
