Show Pro Football Teams to Clash In Salt Lake City Sept. 19 The powerful New York Giants with Lee Grosscup throwing will oppose the colorful San Francisco Fran-cisco 49ers in a professional football foot-ball exhibition game Sept. 19 in the University of Utah stadium. The game is co-sponsored by the Salt Lake Tribune and the Bleacher Quartebacks. This will be the third appearance of the hard running, accurate throwing professionals in the Ute stadium. In 1947 the first game highlighted high-lighted Utah's Centennial Celebration, Cele-bration, and in 1952 the Chicago Cardinals "and Los Angeles Rams put on a thriller. This year, in signing the Rams and Giants, the co-sponsors hit the jack pot. New York, TV fans will recall, re-call, battled the world champion Baltimore Colts in an overtime in the post season championship playoff a game rated by many viewers as the greatest thriller in their memory. San Francisco's 49ers caught the fancy of the west coast two years ago, and crowds rioted as the "sold out" signs were posted at Kezar stadium. Thousands drove to Reno from the Bay area to see the televised games when they couldn't gain admission to the stadium when the 49ers played at home. The game will bea Saturday night affair, starting at 8 o'clock. The defensive minded Giants, bulwarked by Roosevelt Grier, Jim Katcavage,.Dick Modzelew-ski Modzelew-ski and Andy Rubustelli, were the scourge of the Eastern division divi-sion of the National Football League. And what TV fan will forget the running of Frank Gifford and Alex Webster or the passing of the great Charley Conerly? Now, with Grosscup throwing his aerial darts from behind the massive Giant protectorate, the game should fill. the 30,000 seat stadium. ' The 49ers boast their share of stars in Hugh Mcllhenny, J. C. Owen, Dickie Moegle, Billy Wil-ron, Wil-ron, Y. A. Tittle, Joe Perry, Jim Pace and Abe Woodson. Up front the 49ers count heavily on Bob Toneff, Leo Nomellini, Charley Powell, Fred Dugan and Charley Krueger. |
