Show New Law Brings Questions to Fish-Game Board A new fish and game law passed by the recent Utah legislature legis-lature is bringing a multiple of questions to department of fish and game offices. The law, dealing with training and licensing of juvenile hunting hunt-ing license buyers, was explained in meaning and content by the department as follows: . Effective date of this act is April 1, 1960. This means there is no change in present requirements require-ments covering hunting licensing until that date. Beginning, and after that date a year hence, juvenile hunting license buyers will be required to show evidence of training and qualification prior to purchase of such a license. Specifically, a year hence, the law requires that juveniles ages 14 through 16 will be required to present a certificate showing they have successfully passed a required course in gun safety, training and handling. Same will-be true of those persons per-sons 17 years of age through 20 years of age, except those of the ages may also qualify by showing show-ing evidence of having" previous holding of a license, that they have received such training in NRA, ROTC, basic military training train-ing or comparable courses. The act requires the department depart-ment to train teachers who will be qualified to give this course. Anticipating this need the department de-partment has carried on such a teacher training program for more than a year with the result that some 1400 trained adults in the state are already qualified to teach it. I Wildlife organizations and department de-partment field men are, and will be working with the program. They should be contacted by groups, parents or juveniles on a local basis where the teaching of the course is desired. The law, the program and its requirements are the result of many years of effort by Utah's organized sportsmen in cooperation coopera-tion with the department. It has proven a successful effort in many other states. Purpose of the act is to reduce all types of gun accidents and give added safety and pleasure to every person going afield with firearms. |
