Show A SPECIMEN DOG LOVER. There is an unaccountable fascination to some men in the keeping of a ferocious dog which terrorizes the neighborhood. The bigger and fiercer the brute, and the more likely he is to get loose, the more his owner enjoys life, and the prospect of coming home some day and hearing that a woman or a child next door has a series of holes in their anatomy exactly corresponding to the teeth of his pet. One of these beautiful animals, a large bloodhound, managed to slip his chain the other day, and made for a little boy who was standing beside his sled on the top of a hill, at Mr. Vernon, near New York. Although the brute is only seven months old, he is about the size of the six-year boy. He knocked the boy down, caught him by the right hip and shook him as if he were a rat, lacerated his scalp, his eye, his ears and his back. After he got tired of this sport he allowed his owner's wife to take him away. The beast has long been the terror of the village and the neighbors want him shot. But his owner won't listen to that. He will not deprive himself of the fun of seeing his neighbors go half a mile out of the way to avoid his house, or of witnessing his shaking a boy up well, now and then. As a compromise he'll do the fair thing and pay the doctor's bill. |
