Show SOME LIVING PIONEERS Mrs Harriet Louisa Chase McLaughlin is one of the pioneers of 1847 having arrived in Salt Lake i ale on October 25 of that year Mrs McLaughlin is a daughter of Isaac Chase and was born In Sparta Livingston county state of New York April 28 1834 Her parents joined the Morman church and arrived in Nauvoo In 1839 When the exodus from Nauvop occurred they followed Brigham Youngs leadership into the western west-ern wilderness arriving at Winter Quarters on the Missouri in the summer sum-mer of 1846 There they remained enduring the hardships incident to all at that period until June 5 1847 on which date they started for the west following fore the trail of the pioneers whohad started about two months be foreMrs Mrs McLaughlin though but a girl of 13 drove a team of four oxen across the plains from Winter Quarters to Salt Lake valley about 1100 miles She vividly remembers the journey the herds of buffalo seen and the Indians in their wild state The teams at times had great difficulty in passing through the herds of buffalo At other times stampedes occurred causing additional distress to the weary travelers Her father Isaac Chase built the first saw mill in the Rocky Mountain region He was the original owner of what is now known as Liberty park all of which he cultivated as a farm for many yeas ultimately selling it to President Brigham Young He also built the old grist mill which yet stands MRS HAEEIET LOUISA CHASE MLAUGHLIN in Liberty park for President Young and the old residence which is still thereWhile Mr Chase was digging the mill race for the saw mill and down below the surface in the pit for the water wheel some ten or 15 feet his pick struck something unusual On examination an old copper coin was discovered covered covered with hieroglyphics The coin is about the size of an I English penny and what makes it of especial interest and value to many people I peo-ple here is the statement that a comparison of its characters with those on I the copy taken from the Book of Mormon plates shows several to be identical identi-cal and that it is undoubtedly an ancient Nephite relic I was found about February 184S andhas been sacredly preserved by the Chase family ever since being now owned by Mrs McLaughlin This coin has been specially photographed for The Herald by the Johnson two John-son company and will be made the subject of separate article in a day or twoThe The lady at present resides with her family at Earmington Davis county Utah and is hale and hearty She expects to participate as a pioneer in the jubilee exercises and Is deservedly worthy in every sense of the word |
