Show U P OFFICIALS SCORED Judge Coombs Says They Have Misapplied Mis-applied Government Funds St Paul May 20The petition of the Credits Commutation company for leave to intervene in the case of the United States of America complainant complain-ant vs the Union Pacific Railroad company et al defendants was argued before Judge W H Sanborn United States circuit judge this morning Judge Coombs argued ably for the petitioners pe-titioners He said that the comprehensive comprehen-sive design and single purpose of all the sail great public enterprises by the petitioners was to promote and accommodate accom-modate an Interchange of traffic and transportation between the country west of the Missouri river rut Sioux City and the heal of lake navigation at Duluth and there the usefulness and vaiue of all said railroad terminal bridge property depended upon such connection as may be made between the same and the main lines of the Union Pacific railroad and the place of such connections Mr Coombs gave a full history of the building of the Union Pacific and scathingly denounced the Union Pacific officials for misapplying the government govern-ment funds and shutting out the middle mid-dle northwest Judge Sanborn asked the attorneys for the respondents if they would be willing to have inserted in the decree a provision that the petitioner be allowed al-lowed to make connection with the Union Pacific Mr Pierce replied thatthe law covered cov-ered this point They would agree to a mechanical connection Governor Hoadley said he would consent con-sent to nothing so far as Mr Coombs was concerned because if he did so he would be obliged to make further concessions con-cessions Mr Coombs said that his road had not only the right to connect with the Union Pacific now in default but also with the Central Pacific not in default |
