Bascom brothers in Canada Hall of Fame Four brothers of the Bascom Family, Raymond, Melvin, Earl and Weldon, have now been inducted into the Raymond Alberta Sports Hall of Fame for their rodeo achievements. The most recent inductee in-ductee being Mel Bascom. All four brothers were born in the Vernal area to Uintah county Deputy Sheriff John w. Bascom and his wife Rachel Lybbcrt. In 1914 the Bascom family moved from Vernal to Alberta, Canada where the boys entered their first professional rodeo in 1918. Raymond, the oldest of the Bascom boys, was a rodeo pickup man for ten years at the world famous fa-mous Calgary Stampede. Earl Bascom, who was Vernal's Legendary Cowboy in 1989, broke a world record lime in rodeo during his career. He is known in rodeo history as the designer and maker of rodeo's first hornless bronc saddle in 1922 and also rodeo's first one-hand one-hand bareback rigging in 1924. Weldon Bascom was declared to be one of the three top bull riders in the world back in the 1930's. He performed before the Queen of England at the London Rodeo in 1934. Both Weldon and Earl are known as the "Fathers of Mississippi Rodeo" having produced pro-duced the first rodeo in that state in 1935. Mel Bascom, who was the last but not the least of the brothers to be inducted in-ducted into the Hall of Fame, was an all-around rodeo champion. In 1929, he invented the rodeo event known as "Cowboy Jousting" wherein two cowboys on horseback charged each other from opposite ends of the arena. The first cowboy to rope, take a dally and jerk off the other rider was declared the winner. Mel Bascom and another daring cowboy, Rube Snow, were the first to try this exciting event. And they were also the last, as the rope burns around their necks discouraged any other takers. Mel later owned a large ranching operating near Eastcnd, Saskatchewan, Canada. He died in 1987. At the recent Hall of Fame induction in-duction ceremonies in Canada, mcl's oldest son Ron received the honors in behalf of the family.
