Show E 12 Vernal Expren Wednesday, Nov. 7, 1990 iiree local BLM awards given Let's Go To the Movies by Dr. Allen Hasson Avalon Three Vernal residents recently received re-ceived national recognition for their involvement in volunteer efforts with the Vernal District of the Bureau of Land Management (ELM). The three received a certificate certifi-cate of appreciation signed by Cy Jamison, Director of the BLM. Mr. Dabbs, a wildlife biologist with the agency, was recognized for his consistent volunteer support through the years, but was given special recognition for his accom- i plishments during 1989. during that year, Mr. Dabbs "...provided the primary pri-mary direction and supervision for 1,336 hours of hosted-volunteer work and 270 hours of volunteer labor la-bor performed for the most part at the Pariette Wetlands, an award-winning award-winning Waterfowl Management Area located on the Vernal District" In addition, Mr. Dabbs designed and supervised three Eagle Scout service projects including: the clearing clear-ing and seeding of two one-acre V 7 L' I t : ' . According to Ray Tate, District volunteer Coordinator, "Mr. Dabbs, through the years, has maintained a positive 'can do' attitude and has consistently worked at a high performance per-formance level. This most recent accomplishment ac-complishment is just one more 'feather in his cap.'" Mr. Merrell, a hosted-volunteer (hosted volunteers receive some remuneration re-muneration for their efforts, but the remuneration does not come from agency funding) was recognized for his efforts at the Pariette Wetlands, where he accomplished most of his 1,226 hours. His citation indicated that he "...planted and irrigated feed crops, assisted, in predator control, operated heavy equipment, assisted with facility operations and maintenance, mainte-nance, assisted in predator control, operated heavy equipment, assisted with facility operations and maintenance, mainte-nance, assisted in wildlife population popula-tion studies and provided some supervision su-pervision to another volunteer." Mr. Merrell's work was of consistent consis-tent high quality and he required minimal supervision. Mr. Merrell worked under the State's WEAT (work and experience training program) pro-gram) which provides some funding while the participant receives training train-ing and experience. Mr. Anstine contributed 270 volunteer vol-unteer hours and his accomplishments accomplish-ments included: "...construction and installation of high-platform goose nests on the Green River and at the Pariette Wetlands; survey and location loca-tion of several sage grouse winter habitat areas; assistance in the upkeep up-keep and maintenance of the Pariette Wetland facilities; and air-drying air-drying vegetation for classification and display in BLM's plant library." Without Anstine's efforts, much of the work he accomplished would have gone undone. According to one of his supervisors, "his work was of consistent high quality and much of it was accomplished out-of-doors in inclement weather, yet he never complained." According to Dave Little, Vernal District Manager, "It is because of the extra efforts of folks like these which enables the District to consistently consis-tently accomplish a great deal with limited funding. People in the Basin and the American people owe a debt of gratitude to the many folks of this caliber." Writer-prod ucer-director-Baltimoran Barry Levinson ("Good Morning Vietnam," "Rain Man") returns to Baltimore ("Diner," "Tin Men") in this semi-autobiographical story of a Jewish immigrant family with a bickering mom, Joan Plowright ("Love You to Death"); a young couple, Aidan Quinn ("Stakeout" villain) and Elizabeth Perkins ("Big"), who need a home of their own; and a dad, Arm in Mueller-Stahl, whose life is the centerpiece cen-terpiece and a reminder of America as a haven for the oppressed. Many poignant moments, much " humor, excellent performances and production values. Mild PG: Language. 125 minutes. Quigley Down Under A silly, preposterous, contrived, stereotyped and (I'm sorry) fun western with a terrific music track, gorgeous Australian scenery, and Tom Selleck ("Three Men and a Baby"). Tom hires on with Australian "Rancher Alan Rickman (villain in "Die Hard") who turns out to be a scoundrel. Sharpshooter Selleck and Texas hooker Laura San Giamcomo ("Sex, Lies, VT") play cat and mouse with Rickman with the inevitable in-evitable shootouts, last duel, and some good scenes with aborigines.
