Show The Herald Journal Logan Utah Wednesday February 12 Valley Players make all the pieces fit with 6Gigi By Barbara Stinson Lee correspondent One the secrets of presenting quality community theater is selecting pieces which challenge the theatrical company but are still within their realm of accomplishment Knowing this I felt some trepidation before attending the Valley Players’ presentation of “Gigi” a musical by Lerner and Loewe from a book by Collette I wasn’t sure this group could muster the voices to handle the score And I was concerned about the limitations of their playing area the Hillcrest School media center But I was delightfully surprised Even with no sets but a few pieces of furniture the company created an effective image of the coming-of-ag- e story of the child GigL Gigi (Brianna Bacon) is a tom-bo- y a slip of a girl who has no real understanding of the sophisticated if not totally false world of her of well-select- mother ed her grandmother and her sister She grandmother’s is too immature to appreciate her friendship with Gascon (Jay a Haws) playboy whose every exploit is written daily society pages They visit innocently passing time cheating at cards Gigi up in the Journal review begins to be a respite for Gascon a break in his hectic existence Gigi’s mother Andree (Mitzi Mecham) is an outrageously un talented opera singer who has neither the brains nor the time to raise Gigi properly Andree is highly competitive and overly dramatic and Gigi finds some enjoyment in mimicking her mother’s affected manners Gigi's raising is left therefore in the able hands of her grandmother Mamita (Jackie Fullmer) and Mamita’s sister Alicia (Jean J Anderson) The sisters are as different as night and day Alicia is dreamy pretentious and clever while Mamita is earthy practical and wise But Mamita is not without some worldy experience and a secret or two like her past romance with Honore (Larry Cannon) Gascon’s wealthy and philosophical uncle It is Alicia who first notices that what Gigi and Gascon have may be more than just By Patrick Williams USU Information Services According to his own press materials Yakov Smirnoff is “the free world's only totally irresponsible but still lovable Honore is a peach of a role created for a good voice and a classy manner Cannon has them both and can hold the audience's attention with a song even in the midst of a hectic scene change Jean J Anderson’s Alicia is all jewels and wet kisses Alicia has enjoyed life and its implications and Anderson enjoys Alicia The audience took to her immediately The Valley Players have done some little things which really fill out this production Their stage crew is costumed in tuxedoes and formal wear and the rolling out of the Persian rugs for various scenes becomes a ritual Why they choose not to fill the champaign glasses with some kind of liquid substance presents a distracting idiosyncracy Director Gary Bird has accomplished some very creative staging with “Gigi” making use of every inch of the small performance areas A full house cramps the Hillcrest media center and if there are major changes in the winds for the Valley Players I would hope they include larger less claustrophobic home at the “Gigi" continues its run Feb Hillcrest School media center 13-1- 5 Shaw six minute routine and returned to New York City One of his first appearances was Reagan’” SB Mt Logan Middle School Petersen Brianna Bacon is bright and natural as Gigi has a freshness about her which is well contrasted with Jay Haws’ sophistication He plays Gascon nearly bored with the high life planting early the seeds of hope that these two seemingly opposites might be the answer for each other They are a warm couple and put up with each others' idiosyncrasies well Mitzi Mecham is oddly believable as Andree This role is easy to overdo especially in an intimate setting Mecham has been given the freedom to play with the role and has developed an irritatingly funny wistful character who is She the process is becoming a hit from coast to coast His first job in this country like so many other aspiring comics was as a bartender “I thought that it would be easy” he said “In Russia there are only two drinks: a glass of vodka or a bottle of vodka” Yakov moved his bartending career to Grossinger’s in the Catskills listening every night to the comics performing As a result he finally worked up a Honor roll Colette Bright Remember It Well” 9 comic scheduled at USU Convocation Lecture Soviet-bor- n Sixth grade friendship and though she tries to direct the flow of emotions between the two Gigi and Gascon do better on their own which comes as something as a surprise to Gascon This cast does admirably with the score of “Gigi” What they lack in strong voices they make up in spirit They have the wisdom not to try to sing if they can’t so they speak some numbers Cannon is strongest vocally and his rendition of “Thank Heaven For Little Girls” is strictly his own Fullmer had some obvious vocal problems on opening night and wisely opted to downplay her part of the dialogue “I 1986-- 17 Richard Seventh grade Matthew Bentley Nancy Ellis Rand on Ferney Trisha
