Show 2-- The Herald Journal Logan Utah Wednesday February 12 1986 ’ ' Smithfield merchants sell the city Local business association promotes civic spirit special sections editor Businesses in the satellite communities around a major retail area like Logan face special challenges according to Rocky Kimball owner of Rocky's Pizza and vice president of the Smithfield Business Association Merchants in outlying areas generally don’t have the capital cash flow or borrowing power of e businesses and particularly chain establishments that locate in a region’s commercial topics as crime prevention and how to recognize bad checks The association has also influenced local government to an extent which no individual business could have Kimball said When the City of Smithfield was recently considering a new sign ordinance officials specifically invited the association to contribute opinions on the issue “Primarily our goal is to make the citizens of Smithfield aware that we want their business You have to use whatever resources you have to let them By Bryan Welch know you’re here” bigger-volum- ’hub Since they don’t have the same resources outlying businesses must offer unique products and services and need to be perceived as true members of their community Kimball said That’s where the Smithfield Business Association comes in With almost 50 members the association includes nearly every business in and around the community of 6000 people Compared to bigger-cit- y chambers of commerce Smithfield’s dues are inexpensive and their projects modest Many local merchants have served as officers during the four years the association has existed This year the officers include President Janette Graham of Smithfield Auto Parts Kimball Secretary Alan Bird of Peppercorn Products and Treasurer Scott Coleman of Coleman Drug Every year the association sponsors a community Christmas party including free refreshments and entertainment At Easter the association sponsors the annual egg hunt and last year the group inaugurated its annualhealth and physical fitness fair held during the community’s yearly “Health Days" celebration in early May cited recent articles and books like “Megatrends" that have pointed out how much cultural influence small organizations really have “It’s not the city governments and big chambers of commerce that make things happen in a community to change things” he said “It’s the little association that’s really effective’' Kimball The special promotions are the only significant expenses the group has Kimball said and are paid for from the association’s dues “Primarily our goal is to make the citizens of Smithfield aware that we want their business” Kimball said “You have to use whatever resources you have to let them know you’re here” A big percentage of Smithfield residents show up for community events Kimball said and so the events provide a great opportunity for the merchants If the promotions did not work Kimball said they would have to be abandoned “Generally speaking businesses in a smaller community are struggling with the dollar so you have to make sure those things you do are effective” he said “We would like to think that it has had at least a little influence on the people” Particularly in Smithfield the small association is effective the vice president said because of the willingness of local merchants to work together “We get some good participation" he said The association is planning to work in the future toward influencing businesses to locate in Smithfield Kimball said the association represents the active business atmosphere that is important to many businesses looking for a new location That atmosphere is also important to the existing businesses and Kimball said he believes that Smithfield’s businesses are glad the association exists The goal as Kimball explains it is letting the customer know you are a member of his community and that a dollar spent close to home will help maintain and beautify the place where he lives For the merchant the association also provides education in the form of frequent workshops on such “We feel pretty good about it” he said “We’ve been trying to help everybody and I think most people who are members feel like we’ve been pretty successful I think if you talked to any of them who are members they would say that they think their dues are well spent” WHEN SERVICE WARRANTY S IMPORTANT SEE LYMAN'S SERVICE IN lUtlUUUESTOnEi SMITHFIELD BRIDGESTONE 212V SUPERFILLEX SUPERIOR XII HERCULES 40000 mila warranty Road haiard guarani
