Show TERRITORIAL FAIR. The Annual Exhibition of Utah's Agricultural and Manufacturing Products. On Wednesday morning, October 1st, the annual fair of the D. A. & M. Society opened in Salt Lake. There was a large and enthusiastic assemblage of people present. The fair was opened by music from the 14th Infantry Band; and then a written address of very great interest was delivered by His Excellency, Governor George W. Emery. On the conclusion of his speech Governor Emery was applauded following which was music by the band. Col. Winder then introduced Hon. George Q. Cannon, who addressed the assembly extemporaneously; and this speech also was loudly applauded. [Unreadable line] thanks to Gov. Emery for his presence and address; to Hon. Geo. [George] Q. Cannon for his hopeful remarks; to all who had in any way assisted in the work of making the exhibition successful, and to those participating in it. He then declared the fair formally opened to the public. During the whole time that the fair was open, the grounds and buildings were thronged by visitors; and their judgment is unqualifiedly that the exhibition of this year was a great success, being even more complete and worthy than that of last season. In all departments there were creditable showings made of Utah's resources and industries. As anticipated the display of stock surpasses anything of a like nature ever given here before and stockmen from the east, who were present, stated that finer cattle could not be found anywhere. In all other respects the exhibition was unusually good. There were many exhibitors from this portion of the territory, and the merit of their articles met with recognition. We will give a list of prizes awarded to residents of this county, as soon as it can be obtained. |
