Show THE A VIEWED BY ONE OF YOUNG MEN in the sandwich I landa impression of a halt a dollar luke and brimstone through Ah rough the courtesy of sir S S jones wa are permitted to publish the following extract from an interesting letter from one of the promising young men of provo now on a mission to the sandwich islands 1 I came from the district of anna baat wednesday spending new years eve at hilo a beautiful beati ful city na at in size to honolulu on new yearl came to kahawa and met elder home who is laboring in tha district ive i were much pleased to meet and wilt labor together for about a month after which I 1 will return to kau and kona visiting the saints before returning to honolulu on my way heie I 1 aaa the volcano which indeed was a grand eight we generally think of a volcano as a cone bilauca Ki lauca is much different baini a lake of fire situate on the southern por tion of a large basin about six allea away ane volcano house is about three miles from the lake and the trip from there to the lake must be made on foot as there are so many large cracks and proclivities that it would be dangerous to attempt the journey on horseback I 1 left the house in company with a guide about G in the evening both of us took a lantern to light our way and secure us from falling into the deep cracks made from the i quakes the light from the crater can be been for fifteen or twenty miles and from the volcano house bright lurid lights ilami nate the whole country surrounding when within a mile and a half of it we could hear hissing splashing and rumbling bounds becoming more intense as we drew nearer and in a mo ment the fierce hasains mas shot forth hundreds of feet into the air rendering the eight one of magnificent grandeur and almost terrifying but the native guide told me there was no danger un less it be from a few falling cinders we were new at the edge but as the lava is continually being thrown up in the air and falling on the ide quite a high bank is formed around the lake biding it from view I 1 watched my chance and when it teemed to be the most quiet I 1 climbed up the bank to get at the lake well I 1 never saw such a cene there in front of me was an ocean of boiling surging tossing melted rock with color almost as bright as the sun such a hissing slashing rumbling that it seemed ai if the earth was preparing to break asunder after gazing upon this for a moment or two I 1 came down the bank and had no sooner got down than s great lot of hot lava fell in the very spot where I 1 had been standing and came running down the lunk to where we were I 1 took the cane I 1 had in my hand and besperat ed a email piece and pressed a allver dollar in it and will try and preserve it till I 1 return home I 1 also found several other little specimens but as they are so brittle I 1 dont know whether I 1 will be able to keep them from breaking we spent about an hour ithome and then returned to the house and ato our christmas eve supper after which I 1 retired for the evening to dream of being cast down into the lake of everlasting fire and brimstone but when I 1 awoke I 1 found I 1 was in ft nice spring bed which wa quite a pleasant on christmas I 1 went to ka kaahu a distance of twenty miles and stayed over aeeti ng the saint there and then camo on to hilo where as I 1 said before I 1 stayed over new years eve about 2 in tha morning twenty natives came to where I 1 was laying and gave us a nice er enade with their banjos nd guitar they sang some of their sweet bong and bow plesiant yle siant it is to be awakened from ones sleep by B ginging well Tt hink f nothing more of infer eat therefore you will please excuse this short letter your friend and brother JonN tOs Jan |
