Show ot UTAH A letter from the HIS now laboring in the south he is no deceiver A correction there appeared in the about two weeks ago an item from one of our correspondents detailing the conduct of a book agent in moroni said agent was looked upon as a fraud seeking to from the peo pe under false pretenses pretences we published he having no legitimate connection with any forthcoming history of utah mr john 0 williams publisher of bishop whitneys Whit history of utah assume that t probably referred to one of his agents and writes us as follow s editor ENQUIRER SALT lake CITY U tab jan in ft recent issue of your paper appears a communication from richfield Kich field purporting to be written by your traveling correspondent containing an item in relation to a certain beok agent claiming to be authorized to obtain subscriptions fora new three volume history of utah and his dealings amone the good people of maroni and mt pleasant it is alleged anat said agent obtains subscriptions by the following methods he goes to meeting on sunday and partakes of tha sacrament evidently for the purpose of standing in with the brethren then he starts out and takes the nearest man getting his biography which be says will be published in full in the new work etc he is then accused of writing all the cormons mormons Mor mons etc it is stated that bishop lund one of the subscribers made him hand back a 10 bill advanced upon his subscription tor said work etc now the history in question is ayi dently the ore being prepared by bishop OF whitney of this cit yand endorsed by the first presidency dancy the apostles and leading men of the church in general this being the only three volume history of utah that has yet been proposed and of which the is the publisher haying taken pains to get at the facts regarding the methods and dealings of our agent mr hare in mount pleasant and moroni in securing subscriptions of whitneys Whit history of utah I 1 unhesitatingly assert and am prepare d to prove that the allegations of your correspondent quoted above are totally at variance with the truth he has evidently been imposed upon it may be by some party or parties interested in decaying the work and farther ing the interests of some rival publisher the following letter from bishop C N lund of mount pleasant speaks for itsell in refutation of what your correspondent writes concerning that gentleman mt pleasant jan 12 1890 I 1 herewith beg to deny the statements made in relation to my conversation with mr len R hare agent for bishop Whit neya history of utah to the that I 1 requested him to hand me or any one else back money that he had collected for the utah historical society knowing full well that I 1 had no power to made such a demind and that the money he collected was simply in his hands in the disposing of which is controlled by his employers I 1 requested mr hare to make his canvas of the work sufficiently explicit BO that those of our people who were not very well posted in the english language might understand what they were doing I 1 u as glad of mr hara success in mt pleasant and told him BO 0 N LUND bishop lund in conversation with the writer also desired the truth of the other allegations quoted and authorized the uso of bis name in any manner for the purpose of their reputation will the which published and other papera which copied from its calums the derogatory statement please give space to this reply and oblige yours respectfully JOHN 0 WILLIAMS |
