Show MURDERER IS HANGED Former Mayor Pays Penalty Pen-alty for the Killing of His Wife. CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Feb. 10. J. Samuel McGue, former Mayor of this city, was hanged in the county Jail here today for the murder of his wife on Sunday, September 4, 1904. McCue was pronounced dead eight minutes alter the trap had been sprung. Immediately after the execution Mc-Cue's Mc-Cue's three spiritual advisers gave out the following signed statement : "J. Samuel McCue stated this morning morn-ing in our presence and requested us to make public that he did not wish to leave this world with suspicion resting on any human being other than himself; him-self; that he alone was responsible for the deed, impelled to it by an evil power pow-er beyond his control, and that he recognized rec-ognized his sentence as just." Watched by a silent crowd of perhaps thirty persons McCue mounted the scaffold. Not a muscle of his fare moved. Rogers and two guards ascended as-cended the scaffold with him. The prisoner was placed over the trap, .his arms were pinioned and his ankles strapped. The black gown was folded around him and the noose was adjusted. ad-justed. All this while McCue stood without moving. He did not utter a word. The guard took hold of the rope that was to release the trap. Rogers, standing stand-ing alone upon the scaffold beside McCue, Mc-Cue, turned his back and lifted his hand. The trap fell. His neck was broken. I |
